Lucy Letby Guilty
at 15:10 14 May 2024

Criminal History is littered with people who confessed to things they didn't do.

The usual calls for "Frontier Justice" from the usual empty vessels aside, the article certainly raises some interesting questions. On the balance of probability the chances are that she is guilty, but it's certainly something that needs to be reviewed thoroughly. It wouldn't be the first time that medical professionals have been wrongly convicted.

Good job Lucia de Berk wasn't hanged eh Perchy?

Something about this case never sat right with me. Having worked in the public sector for many years I've seen plenty of occasions when the blame for systemic failures was placed on groups or individuals.

She may be guilty, but I'm happy with my choice to not join in the rush to condemn unlike some others. There's a bit more to come out with this I think.

*edit - The article is Geoblocked, which means important people think that the UK shouldn't be able to read it, which is concerning enough. I'll see if I can find an accessible version at some point.

You've got nothing. No evidence, nothing to back up your arguments. Just tedious repetition.

Here. I'll chuck you some more evidence to back me up.

"UK roads second safest in Europe".

https://www.wdm.co.uk/news/uk-second-safest-roads-in-europe

ROSPA - "Great Britain has one of the best road safety records in the World"

https://www.rospa.com/policy/road-safety

Either come up with some evidence to to demonstrate your claims about UK roads being anything but incredibly safe, or give it up.

Cyclists are all innocent lambs as pure as the driven snow who wouldn't dream of bombing past people on pavements, exceeding speed limits or ignoring red lights, whilst all pedestrians are fully aware of their surroundings at all times and couldn't possibly countenance of wandering around in dark clothing on Winter nights or of setting foot in the road without following advice simple enough to be taught to five year olds.

Cars and car drivers are always to blame. Always. Even despite extensively researched and published official figures that clearly demponstrate otherwise, it's still the drivers.

Swansea City : The confusing decision making for a whole season
at 11:54 5 May 2024

Maybe.

A lot of faith being placed him based on not all that much so far. The team selection yesterday was absurd. He absolutely deserves a transfer window with everyone pulling in the same direction, but we need to see consistent improvement on what we've seen since January as a result.

Bugger Bolton.

Phil Gartside would have cheerfully pulled up the ladder behind any other club with PL aspirations in 2009 and their fans cheered him on in the process.

Maybe.

Thus far he's looked absolutely terrified anytime someone has passed him the ball. Hard to tell if he's any good or not.

If that is the case then in no way, shape or form can be he accurately described as a "headache".

It's faintly bonkers that our joint top scorer can be described as "a bigger headache" than Sagoe Jr.

100%.

No need for him tomorrow in a meaningless game. Get him rehabilitated in time for pre-season.

For the most part, no doubt. We wasted a lot of money in the Potter season. Mind you. that we spent a lot of money in the first place is an inconvenient truth to the "Asset Strippers!" types.

Having said that, we also made some wise investments. Celina could have become a profitable asset if Potter had been replaced by a manager who wasn't instantly suspicious of a bit of creativity and flair. If he had been allowed to continue to develop his sale could have covered the cost of the rest of them and more.

Producing ID when turning up to vote is such a no brainer of a requirement it's decidedly telling that the primary opposition to it has come from the left.

I'm not really on board with the idea that the quality of the squad has dropped in general.

For sure this season recruitment has been "confused". We decided to move in a different direction and recruited a manager to do so, spending money to sign players to suit him. That manager failed, and we've snapped back almost 180 degrees to a different manager who doesn't want to use said players, rightly or wrongly.

Otherwise the squad has been at least of a standard needed to be competitive by Championship standards. Surely we must be past the point by now where anyone thinks that last season's squad couldn't have been capable of at least challenging for the playoffs, even if the manager obviously wasn't.

In the six seasons since we dropped to this level, for at least four of them we had a squad that could have finished in the top six. Cooper managed it. Martin failed miserably. The Potter year probably saw too much transition for a serious attempt.

These people seem to think that all danger can be eliminated from life, and all you have to do is inconvenience millions of people based on statistically negligible risks.

I am liking the narrative that despite basically everyone (other than a strange few) I've ever discussed the 20mph rule with thinking that it's an idiotic idea, the petition with half a million signatures on it is apparently worthless because of a few thousand votes that came from outside Wales.

In some cases yes. Mobility is a big one. In a lot of cases, most definitely not.

I deal with cases on a daily basis of people in receipt of PIP who barely ever leave the house. I've seen people who should get the full rate of it turned down, I've seen obvious malingerers awarded everything. I've seen most things in between.

It's a system not fit for purpose that locks some people into a cycle of despair, enables some to live a life of comfort on the taxpayer and denies others what they should be getting.

How much of the loss was down to expenses incurred in the last 25% of the year? How much of it was as a result of contracts/transfers agreed well before that?

I'm not denying that there's a bit of blame shifting going on, but it's also fairly obvious that little of it can seriously be laid at his feet. The next accounts will be all on him.

Your last sentence is basically the opening scene of Idiocracy, and it's frighteningly close to the truth.

There has been the predictable outrage from the predictable sources to the Governments plans to reform PIP, but it is, at heart, something that probably does need looking at. I do question whether someone who suffers from mental health issues needs extra funding. More to the point, in my experience, the worst thing you can do for people with poor mental health is pay them to sit at home all day.

Covid saw an explosion in the cases of people reporting poor mental health. Quite clearly as a direct result of the lockdown mandates, especially amongst the young. Humans are social creatures. They need to be outdoors and with other people. Forcing or enabling them to do the opposite has done a tremendous amount of damage.

On the basis of sheer mathematical probability alone it's effectively impossible that out of the countless billions of planets out there, this one is the only one where life has evolved, especially if you consider the sheer variety of life that comes with it when it does.

Whether that life has in most cases progressed past very basic forms or if your Star Trek/Star Wars type advanced civilisations exist is another matter.

If it's for the financial year 22/23 then it does pre-date his arrival as chairman. It's also not beyond likely, indeed based on my understanding of how the club is currently financed perhaps the most probable situation that much of the budget for the forthcoming season had also been agreed.

It is a clumsy attempt at blame shifting, but not an altogether unjustified one.
