Jewell: Goals Would Have Graced Any Game

Boss Paul Jewell hailed Town’s goals as good enough to grace any game after strikes in either half from Carlos Edwards and Jimmy Bullard saw the Blues to a 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe. The Blues boss felt his side should have sealed their win before half-time.

Jewell said: "They were two really good goals which would grace any game, certainly the first one was a great strike.

"In between them, certainly in the first half, we had lots of opportunities where we should have put the game to bed, but missing chances and wasting opportunities is our achilles heel. But it was lovely to see the goals go in.”

The Town boss said his side couldn’t take the Iron lightly despite their lowly position: "I don’t think you can be disrespectful to Scunthorpe because they’ve beaten Notts Forest and Swansea over the last month.

"This league is tough and they’re an honest bunch of players and they never gave in, but I felt we should have scored three or four goals in the first half and if that had happened we might have had a better performance in the second half when the game petered out a little bit. But, given our recent home form, if we have 23 of them next year, I’ll take them.

"I thought we went about the game really well in the first half - attacked them, got at them, got down the sides, got good balls in the box but once again weren’t on the end of a enough of them.”

Jewell said he switched his keepers in order to see Arran Lee-Barrett in match action: "Basically, we wanted to just have a look at Arran really.

"Márton’s done OK and Arran’s been patiently waiting for an opportunity and I thought I’d give him his chance, simple as that. The same with Josh Carson, I thought I’d give him a go and both of them did OK.”

The Town manager confirmed that Kieron Dyer picked up a minor knock: "Kieron got injured just at the end of training yesterday when we were doing a little bit of team play. He just felt his thigh a little bit. We don’t think it’s anything serious but obviously he wasn’t fit today.”

Scunthorpe caretaker-manager Tony Daws also had praise for Town’s goals: "At the end of the day we were defeated by two really class goals. A great strike for the first one from distance and then the second one was a bit of quality from Jimmy Bullard.

"It’s been a difficult week for the club really and a lot of credit has to go to the players today because I thought we had a really good go.

"They are obviously lacking in confidence because we’ve had a difficult season but I don’t think they could have given any more in terms of effort.”
