The ugly side of the Pennines rivalry rears its head again...

Fourteen charged after Tuesday night's clash, meanwhile Ferguson claims seven police vans protected the Manchester United team hotel and vile chants about Istanbul and Munich rear their heads again.

Fourteen people have been charged with disturbances surrounding Manchester United's visit to Elland Road last Tuesday night.

Two Police were injured, one seriously in clashes before the kick-off.

Meanwhile Sir Alex Ferguson talked of his "fear" claiming the Police sent seven vehicles to protect the leeds City-Centre hotel Manchester United were staying in prior to the game.

The team-coach also needed a Police escort to the stadium.

Inside the ground, the ugly chanting about Istanbul and the Munich Air Disaster marred the excellent atmosphere. Manchester United fans, similar to the "Istanbul Reds" banner displayed in 2001 produced a simple banner with Istanbul in a Turkish black font on a white background.

Predictably, some Leeds fans responded with songs about the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

Regarding the trouble and intimidation at the Man United team-hotel, I think the fact that Leeds had not hosted the old enemy from across the M62 for nearly eight years has perhaps made people forget just how volatile this fixture can be.

The chanting is despicable from either side and those who do this should take a good hard look at themselves. As well as the humanitarian and ethical shortcomings of glorifying death en-masse you would have though the issues sung about would ring a bell with both sets of numpties.

In 1998, a plane carrying the Leeds United team back from a game at West Ham had to make an emergency crash-landing at Stanstead Airport - luckily nobody was seriously injured. Surely this should prick the conscience of any Leeds fan who opens their mouth to sing "Who's that dying on the runway...."

Five years earlier, in 1993, Manchester United officials, players and fans were the first notable recipients of the "Welcome to Hell" reception by Galatasary fans in the Champions League. Their shocking and unacceptable treatment by the Turks was largely ignored by the unsympathetic authorities when it should have served as a warning of the dire consequences to come.

Sane followers of both clubs surely long for the day when this fixture becomes a Premiership one again. Leeds fans crave going in their thousands to places like Old Trafford, Anfield, the Emirates etc whilst (no disrespect) Manchester United fans are more fired up by a visit from Leeds than say Wigan, Stoke or QPR.

In the meantime, some lads from both sides of the Pennines have a lot of growing up to do.
