De Vries - I Have Questioned My Decision

Dorus De Vries admits that he has questioned his decision to leave Swansea last summer

De Vries opted to turn his back on a decent contract at Swansea and join Wolves where he has watched on from the bench for all their Premier League action this season.

"Of course I have asked myself: 'Did I make the right decision?'" de Vries admitted to the Evening Post.

"But I think you know me a little bit by now, and I am committed to the cause at Wolves, where I have signed a three-year deal.

"I thought about it for many nights before deciding to move to Wolves and I still feel I made the right decision.

"I receive that question a lot," he says. "But I didn't make the decision to join Wolves based on the short term, I made it on the long term.

"I just hope that what I have been trying to do on the training ground and all my hard work will eventually pay off."

Aside from a brief spell when he first joined Dunfermline in 2006, de Vries has not been a back-up keeper since his early days as a professional.

But while he is a frustrated substitute, he seems happy to keep his head down for the moment.

"Everybody says that at my age I don't want to be on the bench," he says referring to the "Do you regret leaving Wales" question.

"Of course I don't want to be, but a positive for me is that I am learning to know myself.

"Even if you are not playing, you have to stay focused.

"You have to be on your toes because you never know what can happen with injuries, suspensions or a bad spell for the team — although I must say Wayne has made a good start to the season.

"Unfortunately my playing time has been limited so far apart from the Carling Cup," de Vries adds.

"Wolves brought me here to compete with Wayne and Carl Ikeme, and all I do every day is try to push Wayne while progressing myself.

"It's always disappointing when you are not playing games — that's the same for any athlete.

"But at the moment I am focusing on training hard and playing well in the games I do get, because I need to earn the right to be No. 1.

"I am looking forward to seeing the Swansea guys," de Vries says.

"We are coming off the back of a defeat at West Brom and Swansea are coming off the back of a defeat at Norwich.

"It's going to be an interesting game, especially for me, but we are looking forward to playing in front of our home fans.

"Of course I wish Swansea all the best this season, but not on Saturday.

"Wolves are a big club and the supporters demand a lot from the players, just like at Swansea," says de Vries. "When the results are a little bit on the negative side, there are always going to be questions asked.

"But we will try to stick together as a team and get the momentum we had at the start of the season back.

"We have actually been playing well without getting that bit of luck you need.

"But there is a lot of quality and Premier League experience at this club and I'm sure we will turn things round.

"Swansea will be a tough game, because they try to keep the ball and build momentum, but we are at home and we hope to keep the points at home."
