Player Review 13/14 - Callum Chambers

A great first Premier League season from Callum Chambers that asks big questions about the right back spot next season.

Callum ended up playing almost as many league games as Nathaniel Clyne and finished the season with a growing reputation, however in many ways it was a strange season for the boy who only turned 19 in January.

After starting the first three games of the season and looking the part, after a brief substitute appearance in the 4th, he became the forgotten man as he warmed the bench without getting on in another League game for almost three months, then an injury to Clyne again gave him another chance and he didnt look back, often keeping Clyne out of the side until the final games of the season he found himself again on the bench although now Mauricio Pochettino seemed to have realised his potential and used him off the bench more.

As mentioned elsewhere Chambers is stronger and more defensively minded than Clyne, although like Luke Shaw he can get forward although again like Shaw he has yet to find his accuracy in crossing the ball.

In another team Chambers might have like haw been a regular and even gone to Brazil, but he has found Clyne a tough opponent to oust and Pochettino a rigid man in his line up meaning that the potential to use Clyne in a more forward role with Chambers behind has not been utilised.

There is talk though that Callum is big enough and strong enough to switch to the centre of defence and that could be an option next season, his pace could offer us something in the centre of the back four we currently lack and i for one would like to see him used there, so that we can keep both Clyne and Callum at the club and playing football.

A good first season for Callum, he will only get better and i like many thought that at one point this season his form was better than Luke on the other side 8 out of 10 for me and I await next season with real interest.
