Saints Target Tottenham Defender

Saints are reported to be interested in a central defender during the January transfer window.

Saints are rumoured to be monitoring Tottenham Hotspur's Austrian International central defender Kevin Wimmer.

Wimmer joined Spurs in May 2015 for £4.3 million from German Bundesliga side FC Koln but if he thought he would be first choice his hopes were soon to be dashed when Spurs gazumped Saints for Toby Alderweireld.

With Alderweireld forming a solid partnership with Jan Vertongen, Wimmer's chances were limited last season to 9 starts with another appearance as sub, but he impressed in those matches leading to opinions that he might force his way into the starting line up on a more regular basis and indeed Spurs tied him down to a new five year deal.

But for some reason this season has not worked out, yes a pre season thigh injury did not help, but he has been fit most of the season but even an injury to Alderweireld did not get him back into the team with Eric Dier dropping back and it was only a second injury this time to Dele Ali that necessitated Dier returning to the midfield which saw him get his first action of the season in the Premier League.

So far he has played only two games and although back at the start of October he was being quotes as being happy to stay at White Hart Lane and bide his time, the realisation that he is way down the pecking order has lead to a rethink and the press are saying that he is looking to move in the January transfer window.

The first club to be linked are Saints, there is still a cloud over the future of Jose Fonte who is still to sign a new deal and although he has been performing well this season the club are well aware that he will turn 33 in December and that succession plans have to be put into place.
