Saints shutting out Liverpool at St Mary's could be an advantage come the end of the game at Anfield in a couple of weeks.

Saints could well be thanking their defence come the end of the second leg League Cup tie at Anfield after a look at the rule book confirmed that away goals do count double, although only after the end of extra time.

So if Saints were to lose by a single goal, whatever the scoreline then an extra 30 minutes would be played to determine the winner, however at then end of that period the only scoreline that would force a penalty shoot out would be if Liverpool won by the same 1-0 scoreline as they were beaten at St Mary's.

Any other single goal defeat for Saints would mean that they would be in the final.

That makes Saints scoring at Anfield very important, if we were to notch a goal at any time, that would leave the home side needing to score at least three by the end of extra time.

13.5 In the Semi-Final ties, if the aggregate score is level at the end of the second game an extra half-hour shall be played. If the aggregate scores are still level at the end of extra time the tie shall be decided by goals scored away from home counting twice. If the teams remain equal after this procedure the tie shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with the Laws of Association Football.
