Saints Looking To Break A Club Record

Saints could break a club record this afternoon and it is a surprising one given our defensive issues this season.

Another clean sheet at Pompey on Tuesday made it four in a row away from home and that equalled the current best run of shut outs on the road set in 1922 and again in 1981 in the Kevin Keegan era.

Back then Lawrie McMenemy's side went a total of 399 minutes without conceding a goal in games away to Sporting Lisbon, Stoke, Wolves and then a 1-0 win at Liverpool when Steve Moran scored a late winner on 28th November.

Ironically a harsh winter meant postponements and it would be almost two months before we played another away game, that came on January 19th 1982 when we travelled to Everton for a rearranged game in midweek.

Our shut outs lasted just 4 minutes when the home side scored and it would remain at that score till the 88th minute when Steve Moran repeated his late goals on Merseyside trick to give us a point.

The Daily Echo say that the record stands at 399 minutes without conceding a goal on the road and that Saints need to keep Spurs at bay for 25 minutes to break that this afternoon.

If we can go the whole game that would not only set a new record for games in a row without conceding on the road, but would be a minor miracle worth celebrating in it's own right.
