Between 3rd And 7th ! What Is At Stake Against Wolves.

As Saints prepare to travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening, find out just where we could be in the Premier League table come then end of this weekend's fixtures.

By the end of the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers Saints could either be within a point of joint leaders Tottenham Hotspur & Liverpool in 3rd place and being talked about as the surprise team of the season, or they could be lying as low as 7th and only a defeat away from as low as 12th the following weekend.

In truth either position would have been acceptable to Saints supporters after the opening two games of the season.

So what result against Wolves will determine our position after this weekend's round of games.

Well it is fairly simple if we beat Wolves, we leapfrog both Leicester City and Chelsea and would be on 19 points, 1 ahead of those two teams and only a single point between the joint leaders, this would be as pleasing as it was to go top a couple of weeks ago if only fleeting.

A draw is also fairly simple, we remain in 5th place, but cut the gap between Leicester and Chelsea to a single point, as well as move a point ahead of Everton who at the moment are on the same number of points, 16 to be precise.

The real mathematical complications come into play should we lose to Wolves. If we lose then no matter what the score Everton move above us , we start Monday with a goal difference of +4 with the Toffees on +3, a single goal defeat would see us level on goal difference, but Everton would jump above us on goals scored, unless we had scored 4 in that defeat in which case we would stay above them on goals scored in this case, as they currently have scored 19 whilst we start the day with 16.

If we do lose then whether Wolves themselves jump above us depends on the scoreline, they would join us on 16 points, but they are currently on -1, this means that to leapfrog us, they need to beat us by 3 clear goals, goals scored will not come into play here, they either beat us by 3 clear goals or stay below us.

So this means that by 10pm tomorrow we could be 3rd, we could be 5th or we could be 6th or 7th, but not 4th.

As mentioned, this is a situation few would have predicted a couple of months ago , so this is a ride we just have to sit back and enjoy, there is a long way to go before the end of what will be the strangest season in football's history, where we finish will not be entirely decided on one result, we will lose games, already no team is unbeaten this season, there is everything to play for.

Ultimately I think we still lack a little something to finish in the top six, but who knows what can happen, all we can do is try to keep winning games and see where we end up.

One thing is for sure like most things it is never a smooth ride being a Saints fans, so lets just enjoy that ride.

The big question is how can a side that was so tight at the back, so clinical up front and who could pass the ball around almost with their eyes closed, become the disorganised rabble that they were at the Leicester City this evening.
