Electric cars to be taxed per mile. on 10:33 - Nov 27 by blacky2013
I don't get why people are surprised by this. No government could lose the sort of money they get from fuel duty and not replace it. EVs are significantly heavier compared to a similar sized combustion engine car so will increase wear on roads so that will also increase costs. It won't be long before there is little difference between an EV and petrol/diesel car in terms of taxation.
Just to point out that diesel and petrol vehicles cause health issues related to air pollution, at great cost to the NHS. There are 43,000 premature deaths annually in the UK due to air pollution.

My point entirely.
Will "we" be here in 100 years, a thousand years, ten thousand? Maybe, maybe not.
Climate change is a fact - it's been happening for millions and millions of years.
There may come a time when the only things sliding across a scorched desert or a frozen tundra (pick your own theory as suits) are Chelscum fans that have morphed into cockroaches but Mother Earth will still be here.
"Climate change is a fact - it's been happening for millions and millions of years."
Yes, but the many, peer reviewed studies which have indicated that recent CC and GW are man-made take into account natural influences on our climate. They allow for Milankovitch cycles and solar activity.

All fair, but if china are powering up multiple coal fired power stations per month our (The UK's)best efforts will produce no negligable benifit either way.
I think the question should be have the costs of operating/owning an EV become low enough to impose the extra tax burden yet?
How do you think the budget will impact the proliferation of the technology from here on?

Even better is the fact that we don't burn coal anymore as it is not "GREEN", but we are happy to export to China to make money even though that them burning it will do the same damage to the planet than if WE burnt it.

My post wasn't an anti EV post or anything to do with the environmental benefits of EVs. I was merely pointing out that it was obvious that EVs were going to be taxed to make up for the lost revenue on fuel duty. EVs are good for local pollution issues but over the making of the vehicle and the mining for the battery metals etc and the way the various parts are then transported around the world make the whole low pollution spiel a bit dubious. Also pollution in general will only be better if we can get high polluting countries to meet the same pollution standards as us.

Surely it must be getting harder to clock a car these days? My car has its own SIM card so it can connect to the internet for navigation etc. Its not beyond the wit of man for it to send its mileage and location back to HQ for some nefarious purposes.
Who is buying ex-Police cars? They must be the most abused vehicles going, driven pretty much 24/7
And the best maintained on the road as well way better than most second hand cars around usually with top spec parts due to the type of work they do

1) A new car does not have a MOT for 3 years. An EV can have the mileage turned back with a laptop in the right hands. 2) With the mining required and disposal of spent batteries EV are not environment friendly. 3) For anyone who has bought one have you had a service yet? What is the actual value of your car now? 4) Why does Milliband go round in a Range Rover diesel. 5) Why are showrooms forced to sell them under threat of large fines? 6) Why do they always quote registrations and not actual sales?

on point 2 batteries are recyclyed very very little waste from them these days
They dont need as much if any servicing last tesla owned for 36 months cost us around £15 quid to keep it on the road for windscreen washer fluid nothing else.
as for value prob similar to any car which is on the road , think u loose around 30% soon as you tyre hits the road for the first time , so all cars loose a shit load soon as u hit the road not just evs

Thought the conversation was quite balanced. May not be heading the direction you'd like, but worth remembering the crap on the internet includes AI and most of the knowledge of humanity.
The issue at hand isn't 'EV good or Bad' its how the taxation will impact their proliferation.
Unless I'm reading a different thread.

What isn't mentioned on here is that they have also produced the world's largest battery - vanadium based - and built the world's largest hydroelectric dam.
That said, EVs aren't green, they are *greener*. A truly green car would have to made of a tree growing in your garden, with your own bare hands . Anything manufactured is going to involve greenhouse gas emissions. There are no perfect solutions, apart from walking, I suppose.

affordable / subsidised public transport is the only way forward.
My journey into town (about four junctions of the M4) is now £32 return by rail. That's not cheap enough, or quick enough to dissuade me from driving in for 30 mins and paying to park all day.
Public services need to be owned by the state, and subsidised to work for the public. Not run by, usually foreign companies for a profit, which usually doesn't go back into our economy anyway...
Its not great, and I don't see it getting any better
