What was the best advice you were ever given?
I have been lucky and had some great advice but the best I think was a friend who gave me some parenting advice just after our son was born.
He told me not to miss a thing because you don't get a second chance. Don't miss a birthday for work, or a school sports day, christmas concert or Easter parade, once they're gone, they're gone and you'll never get another chance at that age.
We didn't miss anything, maybe that's why we have such a great relationship with our son.
My friends son is 28 now and they are best mates. I hope my son and I are like that. |  | | |  |

Best advice I ever received was from my late grandfather, a ww2 Royal Navy veteran who served until he retired. I wanted to follow in his footsteps.
I was offered a Navy commission after uni and was due to start in BRNC Dartmouth in early 2001, the board interview was difficult and I couldn't wait to start. Then I got offered another graduate job based in Swansea starting at a similar time.
I had no idea what to do so asked my grandfather what he thought. Without a second thought he said "if you have to ask me, the RN isn't for you"
I took the other job. I'm probably poorer but wouldn't have the family I've got now.

Not so much advice as following my parents example.
They were hardworking, working class people who devoted all their lives to raising six children.
Never rich money wise, but certainly rich in the love of a devoted family.
They both passed away before they could see what my late wife and I achieved. I never forget or deny my working class roots or where I am from.
I am proud of what we have achieved and I owe everything to them ( as well as my wife, who was definitely the brains and beauty of our partnership)
They were good, kind people which is worth more than all the riches in the world. |  |
