Transfer Merry Go Round May See 1 Out & 2 In at St Mary's
Monday, 29th Jan 2024 13:35

Just as you think that the transfer window is very quiet comes news that could see the door at Southampton not just revolving but spinning, but it is, like most moves in this window dependent on several other deals along the way.

footballleagueworld.co.uk are claiming that Wolverhampton Wanderers are about to reignite their interest in Saints striker Che Adams.

Wolves had been hoping to do a deal for former Saints loanee Armando Broja, but it seems that there is not likely to be a deal done for Broja by Wolves or for that matter any other club as long as Chelsea hold out for a whopping £50 million, for a player who in 29 Premier League starts and the same number off the bench has scored just 8 Premier League goals in 58 games in total.

6 of those goals were of course for Southampton where he started 21 games and 11 off the bench.

With Broja being priced out of the market, Wolves are said to be looking again at Che Adams whose goal per game ratio in the Premier league of a goal every 4.96 appearances is better than Broja's 1 every 7.25.

Adams could be bought for something around £6 million as he enters the last few months of his contract.

If Wolves do not come in then Adams is likely to stay put and the only signing into Saints being Manuel Benson from Burnley initially on loan but with an option to buy.

But if the wolf does come knocking at the door and the offer is too good to turn down for both club and player, then Saints have a back up plan, they would of course still sign Benson, but they would also make a move for David Brooks from Bournemouth.

Most Saints supporters might think that if Adams goes then we go for a centre forward, but that seems not to be the case, Adam Armstrong would be moved into the middle, his natural position and Saints would look to have the option of having not only Ryan Fraser on one side of him, but Benson & Brooks.

However Saints are still comfortable that if they had to sell Adams that they could cope if they made only one signing, assuming that would be Benson then they would still have Adam Armstrong in the centre, Fraser & Benson out wide with back up from Sam Amo-Ameyaw and also Sam Edozie & Kamaldeen Sulemana back from injury & Joe Aribo soon to return from AFCON & also Sekou Mara in the wings.

Ideally Saints would keep Adams, but they have several plan B's and are comfortable with all of them.

With the transfer window closing at 11pm on Thursday 1st February there is still a lot of business to be done yet.

Nick,” However Saints are still comfortable that if they had to see Broja that they could cope if they made only one signing”. Sorry, you’ve completely lost me there.

I Dont think Adam Armstrong through the middle is an option hes not got the
physical presence needed.I Do think Mara is progressing quite nicely though.

IF ...Benson does arrive he may not be the only experienced player we sign /or/ loan.
The possible departure of ; Che Adams may yet happen, (if so, he will need to be replaced by an experienced striker PDQ ), whilst some other strange sources have also mentioned McCarthy, KWP, Bednarek as possible departures (?) ...
Don't think any of those are ever likely to happen..(stupid adolescent posts).

Kami Doyle may not be the only departure at U21 level. Last window we farmed out about a dozen Academy lads on short /season-long loans, and although a few have returned with injury issues, others have made their mark. Lewis Payne has had quite a few outings (and scored) for Newport County and even came on late in FA cup match v. Man Utd, and
Dom Ballard featured regularly for Reading and scored goals before his unfortunate injury.

Might not be too many new faces joining the first team squad, but after the U18 stage has passed by many youngsters will need real game time and not " schoolboy football " .

If Wolves' interest is genuine we should probably let Che go, as much as i'd like to see him sign a new contract & stay. But, we'll only have 3 days to find a replacement and with Ross Stewart unlikely to feature this season, that needs to be quick.

Personally, i'd like to see us try to get Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth. Looks a real talent, just turned 23, and scoring goals in a poor side. Not sure if he's 100% a striker though, but plays RW also. Plus he's English.

Is this Benson chap any good, he's 26 and doesn't seem to have ever set the wo0rld alight?

Not convinced that any if these will happen. January has a tendency to promise more than it delivers. Lots of reporters at clubs on deadline day by themselves.
