Trundle Gives Swansea That Six Appeal

Brian Flynn fielded two different teams in this match although neither gave us an indication of the starting line-up against Bury on August 9. Several people expected to feature in that opening line-up showed in each half but it was Lee Trundle and Andy Robinson who really caught the eye with excellent finishing in the second half. Swansea had already spurned the chance to take the lead when James Thomas missed a first half penalty, the keeper diving low to his left to save a poorly struck effort. Nugent then opened the scoring after 25 minutes with Antonio Corbisiero adding the second shortly after the break. The first half had shown the value of Martinez and his passing and vision although it also highlighted some of the weaknesses of Keiron Durkan that he was unable to complete some decent moves when he found himself with the ball in space on the left. Add to that a decent performance from O'Leary at the back and you have something for us to build on. Brian Murphy played the first half for the Swans with little to do and some nerves seemed to be showing through. The second saw not only a change of eleven players but a change of kit from white to red and the Swans upped the tempo. Lee Trundle took two superb goals as did Andy Robinson and you started to get the impression that maybe goals will not be at a premium this season for the Swans. Trundle looked every bit the part that we want him to play and with Robinson making up for what he lacks in height with ability also looks as if he may be worth a contract at the Vetch. Karl Connolly also impressed out wide and if you were to combine him with Martinez, Britton and probably Coates in midfield it could prove to be a pretty useful side. A couple of Flynn's experiments did not work - especially Johnrose at the back but this performance showed for plenty of optimism ahead of the new season. Always tough to gauge when you don't actually see the XI we will play together and the standard of the opposition was not high but what we have to remember is that you still have to do the business no matter who you play and Swansea did that with some ease tonight. The match was marred at the end with an injury to Roger Freestone but with the diagnosis appearing to be just a dead leg there should not be too much cause for concern. The press there lined up for their interviews with Brian Murphy at the end of the match and no doubt we will be reading his impressions over the course of the next 48 hours in various publications.
