BRIGHT NEW FOOTBRIDGE

Work has started on a state-of-the-art illumin- ated footbridge linking Swansea's £24 million Morfa Stadium with a new retail and leisure park. It will replace the old timber bridge and provide new pedestrian and cycle access across the River Tawe. Work on the new stadium itself will begin soon. The old Morfa Stadium, however, has now been demolished to make way for a multi-million pound retail and leisure complex. This complex will be linked via the footbridge to the 20,000 all-seater stadium on the opposite bank. Swansea Council leader Lawrence Bailey said: "This is another milestone for the Morfa Stadium project. "We have already seen work begin on the new stadium site, while the old stadium has been demolished to make way for the retail and leisure development. "We are delighted with the progress at Morfa and look forward to work beginning on the stadium construction." Swansea-based company Interserve has been awarded the contract to build the stadium which will be the home of the city's football and rugby clubs, the Ospreys regional rugby team and host other major sporting and music events. The cable-stayed steel construction is five metres wide and has a total span of 54 metres. It has a 22-metre high mast that will be illuminated to highlight the structure. A 500-tonne crane, used for positioning the component parts of the structure on to the foundations, will arrive on site on Monday. The bridge will be erected on the western bank and transfered to the eastern side on Tuesday . But, Swansea Council said today the structure will not be open to public access until the other developments on either side of the river are complete. Restaurants and a health club will be located in the leisure complex which will include B &Q and Morrisons stores. The bridge, designed in conjunction with Nusteel Structures, will be built by Swansea-based contractors C A Blackwell Ltd.
