MORFA CLEARANCE WORK UNDERWAY

Demolition work has begun on the old Morfa Stadium to make way for a new retail and leisure complex. Seventy workers have begun dismantling the former athletics stadium and council chiefs say it could be completely cleared by the end of the week. Construction of the new Stadium, a 20,000 all-seater complex, is expected to start in November. The site of the existing stadium will become a modern retail and leisure complex with stores and shops, including B &Q and Morrisons stores, three restaurants and a health and fitness club on the site. Capital and Regional plc bought the land from Swansea Council, which is using the cash to build the new Morfa Stadium. Work has started on the new retail development - the first to be built will be B &Q - and work is also underway on the new road into the area. Kevin Dickson, manager for Miller Construction, which is carrying out the demolition, said: "We are using a long reach excavator to nibble away at the stadium structure. "We hope to finish the demolition work by the end of the week and clear the site of material and rubble within about four weeks." Swansea Council leader Lawrence Bailey, said: "We are delighted with the progress of the Morfa development. "This latest demolition work will enable the retail and leisure complex to go ahead at great speed. "The new stadium is also progressing with the preparatory work almost complete. "The people of Swansea are getting a stadium to be proud of."
