That Was The Transfer Window That Was

So at eleven o'clock last night the transfer window - according to Sky Sports News - 'slammed shut' on a summer of spending that saw an obscene £800m+ change hands with Manchester United leading the way in their fight against relegation.

OK, so the last few words of the statement above may just be designed to be a little inflammatory but it highlights just how difficult it is to get the right transfers in as a side that spent £150m (around 17% of the total spend) has started the season so slowly. As one Manchester City fan tweeted a couple of weeks back "At least when our spending was killing football, we were actually winning things)

It is also an amount of money that as Swans fans I don't think we will ever be able to compete with after a summer where we spent less in fees than we did last summer but probably increased the highest earnings of our top players to numbers that we could probably only dream of a few years ago.

Indeed we probably now have players on the books who earn more in a week than the gate receipts at the Vetch used to be when the current board took over. It is such a story you would think they could make a film about it!

But as others spent big, what did our transfer window look like overall as it was one of our busiest transfer windows to date with plenty in and out of the Liberty Stadium.

And it is quite a list of the players that have left with Pozuelo, Vorm, Ben Davies, Chico, Pablo and Canas all on their way this summer having been released/sold by the club. Then there was Michu he was off to Napoli on a season long loan whilst the likes of Leroy Lita and David N'gog both departed at the end of their contract.

Finally we had Roland Lamah, Alvaro Vazquez and Jonathan De Guzman all of whom came to the end of their loan spell with the club.

Total all those players together and we had 12 players all of whom had seen first team football last season that would not be here to see the same for this season.

That meant that we had to be busy with new players in. And we didn't disappoint in that front with Lucasz Fabianski arriving early in the summer and he was followed by Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jefferson Montero, Federico Fernandez, Stephen Kingsley and Tom Carrol. 8 new additions there with 5 more players added as part of the Under 18 or 21 squad (as they were deemed at the time of transfer)

Whilst we lost the likes of Vorm, Ben, Chico and Michu who were probably the only four permanent members of our squad that would play more often than not we can argue that the replacements in are stronger than them for the formations in which we play. De Guzman for me was a blow to not get him back but with Ki returning from Sunderland we effectively replaced him with one of our own players anyway which almost feels like a new signing.

Four wins at the start of the season will always suggest that it was not a bad summers work for Garry Monk and the club but time will tell on how the squad copes with the pressures of the season ahead. The lack of Europa League football this season will help and I think we have every reason to be optimistic about the challenges that we have.

One of the worries aimed at Garry Monk when he was appointed manager was that he would not be able to attract players to the club given his inexperience but I think it is fair to say that with the signing list above then that myth can be well and truly put to bed right now with some top quality signings in place.

How they all settle in for many still remains to be seen but I think there could be good times ahead and a job well done in the transfer window for me.

On a scale of 1-10 how happy were you with our transfer window? (1=low, 10=high)

Brave Swans in memorable game at Carrow Road
It was a pulsating game to watch and very much one of my favourite away games of the season. The Swans looked an entirely different side to that we saw at Middlesbrough when it is clear a catalyst for commitment was agreed behind the scenes at Swansea City. To a man every player grafted and wore the shirt with pride. To see the players really acknowledge the Swans support at Carrow Road this afternoon was emotional.
