He Could Have Been A Jack - Again!
Paul Clement admitted that former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard was a player he tried to sign before he announced his retirement this week at the age of 38.
Clement had worked with Lampard during his time at Chelsea and wanted to link back up with the midfielder at Swansea during the transfer window, clearly seeing him as someone who could fit into his midfield and add some experience.
But Lampard seemingly had already made his mind up on retirement and knocked back the chance to end his career in a similar way to which it started during his loan spell at the Vetch more than twenty years ago.
Clement said: "We had a chat. I think he appreciated that I called, because of our relationship. I'm not saying it got close, but we had a conversation."
He added: "It did not go very far, but it would have been nice. It would have been good.
"His ability as a player we all know about but he is also a very good leader and character and a fantastic professional.
"But instead we got Tom Carroll - so I am very happy."
Clement also revealed that Lampard was one of the people he consulted before taking the job at the Swans and that he got a glowing reference from the player
"I had spoken to him about here. He said he really enjoyed his time, it was a long time ago now when he was at West Ham," Clement said.
"He spoke really fondly of the club and the people who were here. It was part of his education onto going on and having such a great career."

Brave Swans in memorable game at Carrow Road It was a pulsating game to watch and very much one of my favourite away games of the season. The Swans looked an entirely different side to that we saw at Middlesbrough when it is clear a catalyst for commitment was agreed behind the scenes at Swansea City. To a man every player grafted and
wore the shirt with pride. To see the players really acknowledge the Swans support at Carrow Road this afternoon was emotional.
Swansea reject Cullen contract and trigger one year option Liam Cullen has had his request for a new contract dismissed by Swansea City after discussions broke down last week. The lowest paid ‘senior’ player at the club ( he is twenty five) asked for a better contract increasing his £3,500 a week to around £7,000 a week over three years.
Sam Parker hasn’t turned down a new deal, he is willing to negotiate He was a revelation for the Swans for the few games he played this season, and now it emerges Sam Parker has ‘turned down’ a new Swansea City contract. News is thin on the ground, and some of it just incorrect as he looks to involve his representatives in some further negotiations. Plus his current contract runs for two more years.
Swansea City : The vision is clearer, so Jamal Lowe ? There were some worrying moments for the Swans yesterday, on three occasions mistakes from playing out from the back nearly saw the home side score. And is there now a case for Jamal Lowe to be offered a contract at Swansea ?
