The Swans start their FA Cup campaign away at Aston Villa this afternoon although there will be very mixed views amongst everyone no doubt as to how far we want to proceed within the competition.
I have to say I was hugely disappointed last year to have watched us progress to the quarter-final - the furthest for more than 50 years - to then throw it away with no effort at all against Spurs which just about summed up the Carlos Carvahal era at Swansea. Or at least the end of it. For me, being within one game of a Wembley semi final that was unforgivable and probably more so than the meek way we then went onto surrender our Premier League place.
This time round we have a different dilemma as a Championship club but one that we could look on with interest. We are a mid table team, probably unlikely to push on over the next four months towards the play offs but certainly too good to slip into a relegation battle at the wrong end of the division.
In theory then this could suggest that we put out a strong side today and try and progress in the competition. Although no side outside of the top flight has won this competition since 1980 (West Ham) there have been instances of strong runs from outside the Premier League and with good performances and kind draws why could that not be us.
I think Aston Villa will certainly approach it differently. They will make multiple changes in my view and certainly not look much like the side that won down here on Boxing Day which could mean if Graham Potter wants to go for it then we have that position where we could - on paper at least - look the strongest side come kick off.
The FA Cup has always been the competition where surprises are sprung and whilst we didn't have the hardest run into the quarter finals last year I still have that nagging doubt that we threw away a good chance albeit against a very good Tottenham side.
The competition may not hold the magic that it once held for us fans who have lived through a couple of generations but it remains a competition that I would love one day to see us at least compete in the final of. It was always something growing up I wanted to see and I am not sure that desire has ever changed, Whether it is possible in my lifetime remains to be seen but I do get frustrated when I see the disdain in which the competition is held these days knowing that every side seems to make wholesale changes in the belief that the next league match is more important (how did that work out for us last season?)
So we go into the third round today with me in a position that I am optimistic that we can progress but I think that comes down to the ambition of the club to want to progress and the only instant we will know that is when we see the team sheet around 2pm.
