Recent discussions between Swansea City and Liverpool regards Rhys Williams have concluded the young Preston born player will spend the next five weeks trying to regain his place in the Swansea City starting eleven. That seems unlikely after Ryan Bennett was suspended for Saturdays game against Blackpool and Ben Cabango returned to the fold.
Williams remained on the subs bench for the game.
As we reported recently Liverpool have growing concerns about Rhys Williams growth as a players at the swans due to his limited appearances for the club. So much so they sent their loan manager to Swansea recently to discuss his progression. Martin has responded by stating Williams only came out of the team in the first place because he had a tight groin. "He’s found it really hard to come back in because the boys have played so well, and he understands that. He’s trained with a smile on his face and he deserved to get on the pitch against West Brom to help us see the game out. There'll come a point where he gets the chance to be involved on the pitch again and then he has to take it. All he can do now is focus on being present every day, training as well as he can and supporting his team mates then wait for his opportunity."
Since those comments Williams hasn’t had any opportunity to prove his worth to Russell Martin, on the pitch that is, but the young player remains positive "My aim was obviously to come here and play games and hopefully, I’ll get the chance to do that and earn my shirt when I am called upon. I was trying to implement the way Russell Martin wants me to play in the first team and hopefully he’s happy with the way I play.” Now down the pecking order Liverpool will want to see Williams selected on match days. Ben Cabango’s reintroduction to the team on Saturday confirmed Williams is at least two steps away from being selected. The form of Kyle Naughton and Ryan Manning, albeit unexpected in the positions they play at isn’t helping his cause.

Unless injuries really do take their toll Williams is unlikely to get a look in at many, if any of the games running up to the new year. It doesn’t bode well for him to remain at the swans after January. Liverpool won’t want their young starlet sitting games out on the bench. Already they must be considering where to place Williams in January, and let’s be honest it is highly unlikely to be at Swansea City.
It is also highly unlikely, despite Martin’s impressive training schedules and teaching styles that Liverpool will happy with Williams just learning and developing away from the starting eleven. It isn’t a conundrum for Russell Martin, he has made his position very clear. So unless Williams gets some game time under his belt in the coming weeks a recall to Anfield looks very much on the cards.
