Blimey. Last weekend's Observer said there had been a theft of a copper boiler, radiators and other equipment from a pub on Willbutts Lane "that was undergoing renovation".
Renovation or demolition ? Was told a few weeks ago that it was being 'done up' in time for Christmas.

I'm a big fan of Wetherspoons, but with good quality cask ale at £1.99 a pint it's no wonder other places are struggling.
Unless pubs are prepared to serve decent food, sales on alcohol just can't generate a profit these days. |  |

Agree D_Alien. Spoons have certainly shifted the bad rep the used to have and are now generally excellent especially in the ale and cider department.

Not just in Dale though, it's a nationwide trend.
The government at the time were warned this would happen when the smoking ban was imposed and chose to ignore, on the other hand bars in Spain grow year on year, due to their canny government offering the choice by means of a smoking licence, which of course brings in a lot of revenue.
As another poster has pointed out, the only chance to survive in the trade these days is if you are offering decent value food.

Hardly a complete list. The White Horse next to the Red Lion on Newgate, the Shakespeare on Holland St. (next to the Pavillion? cinema), the Theatre, the Duke of ?????, the Beehive and the Market Tavern all immediately spring to mind. all closed as a result of the redevelopment of the Newgate, Spotland Road and Cheetham St. areas in the 1960's. Anybody else remember the Farmer's Arms on Edenfield Road a couple of 100 yards past the White Lion? Lovely old couple ran it. It was like going into their home. You sat in the front room. The beer (Wilson's Bitter) was kept in a barrel in the kitchen. It was carefully poured into a large enamel jug from which your beer glass was filled. Sadly it closed down when the couple passed away circa 1961 but the pub is still there as a house called The Old Farmer's Arms. |  | | |

I remember the Shakespeare net to the Pivi, Anna's shop further down, the Theatre ,the Duke of Wellington on corner of Blackwater st down from the Stud shop and Red Lion opposite. The one further up from the Old Clock Face on Toad Lane I thought was The Market House.

Started my drinking career at 15 in the Slubbers Arms - remember drinking rum n' black and putting "Both Sides Now" by Judy Collins on the old jukebox.
