The saddest thing is that Wales is continually talked about as some sort of charity case in need of perpetual subsidy from elsewhere. With a Government even remotely interested in wealth creation instead of redistributing other peoples there's no reason at all why we couldn't become a prosperous part of the world.

We could be a haven for tourism, industry and innovation. Skilled graduates from all over the UK could be drawn here by relatively cheap housing and a good quality of life if employers worthy of them thought that Wales was a good place to do business.

Instead our Govt does its level best to dissuade it with a lunatic transport policy, attacks on tourism, the suicidal drive towards Net Zero and a general suspicion towards any kind of profit. Wales as a whole is massively dependent upon Government agencies for work. Nearly a third of the entire Welsh workforce is employed by the state.

It's not remotely a coincidence that almost all of Wales' richest people, from Terry Matthews to Dai Topshelf, had to go elsewhere to make their fortunes. Either that or they or derived it from businesses operating significantly beyond Offa's Dyke.

Perhaps they could be made to wear armbands with a cross of St. George on them.

The ospreys new ground?

It's faintly bonkers that a thread about egg chasing has reached six pages on a Swans site.

Ospreys games at WR cost The Swans money. It is to our great benefit that they're finally getting the message that White Rock is too big for them. Obviously it's taken longer than it should have because of the eggers bizarre belief that they're a major sport in the area, but eventually we've gotten to where we need to be.

Where they move to or whether they continue to exist is of no interest to SCFC. Chuck a couple of 500 seater stands up at Mynydd Newydd and that would be enough.

You're basing your argument on an assumption, which most people who shudder at the very concept of NHS reform also do.

I have no idea one way or another what sort of system that Farage would implement if he had the power to do so. It is however fairly obvious that an "insurance based system" is not necessarily a bad thing.

No doubt. We're a dirty, destructive, wasteful species and the Planet would be a lot happier if we weren't here.

Plaid would welcome ten million migrants as long as they weren't English.

Cottage burning halfwits best ignored.

There are a lot of people desperate to play down any climate issues.

As for myself, I'll stick with what I already think. I don't doubt that the climate is changing. I do doubt how much effect humanity is having on it, and I distrust a lot of scientific evidence provided by people who depend upon those selling the narrative that humans are responsible for their funding.

It's pretty clear that a lot of "green" policies are being pushed by those on the Socialist side who have seen their arguments utterly discredited over the last 30/40 years. Watermelons, so named because they are green on the outside and red on the inside, have proliferated. The arch Goblin herself, Greta Thunberg, comes from a family very far on the left.

Having said all that, there is no serious downside to humans living in a less polluting, more environmentally conscious way. Whilst we shouldn't be expecting the working classes to shoulder the burden of Net Zero, especially when the Chinese are opening coal fired power plants like Lidl opens new supermarkets, I don't see a move towards recycling more, renewable power, and electric vehicles (where suitable) as a bad thing.

Heavy cloud cover will result in higher overnight temperatures. It's why deserts can go from boiling to bloody cold in the same day. I have no trouble believing that average temperatures are higher.

The problem with averages however is that higher figures can skew the overall picture. The average pre-tax salary in the UK is £28,000 a year. A helluva lot of people earn less than that.

In fairness that also pretty much describes Ronald.

It's an option if we can't find anything better. Would be a bit disappointed if we settle this early in the window.

Dreadful manager. Trying to bore his way through tournaments playing Steve Cooper football. Will achieve results against most but inevitably fall short when it matters, which sounds awfully familiar.

They've got enough talent to play much better football than they do.

Nathan Wood dilemma : Nothing to do with improvement it’s all about profit and

He's really not very good. If he's anything more than a bench option at best next season then someone will have screwed up.

In terms of raw talent then Wood is possibly the best we have, although the talent is buried pretty deep. There will be clubs out there who think that they can get the best out of him and hopefully at least two will want to prove it.

General Election

Let's be honest here. I doubt Sunak gives much of a toss if the Tories lose the election. He's probably actively hoping for it. Nothing he is doing or saying suggests that he genuinely thinks they can or wants to win.

If you had a missus worth as much as his is, homes all over the World and a lifetime of easy cash on the lecture circuit why the hell would you put yourself through even more of this?

He hasn't stood down as an MP yet because doing so would make it even more obvious, but I wouldn't be remotely surprised to see a by-election in Richmond & Northallerton within the next twelve months.

I don't doubt for a split second that lots of racists voted for Brexit. A stopped clock is right twice a day.

Europe is great. I've been to France and Ireland numerous times. I'd love to spend some time in Germany, Austria (Vienna Christmas Market is on my bucket list) and Italy. I have no desire however, nor I suspect would the average citizen of said nations, to have decisions critical to the future of the UK being made by a cabal containing unelected Belgians, Spaniards, Danes or Luxembourgers.

I'm not fond of the concept of the House of Lords, but at least most of them are British.

If we have ambitions of ever rejoining it would be a pre-requisite. They'd love to get the UK economy tied to it. If we'd stayed? I've said in this thread I suspect the whole shebang will collapse in a couple of decades anyway so probably never.

That doesn't change the dream though. And their single minded pursuit of the dream against all common sense and will of the populace is what will do for it in the end.

Would require all the leading European politicos to give up their frequently denied but fairly obvious dreams of one United States of Europe, with one largely unelected Governing body, one currency, one military, one flag, one anthem etc.

Unlikely. If they'd shown even the slightest willingness to abandon any part of it then maybe Cameron might have won enough concessions to swing the referendum his way in the first place.

The current system at least offers a change.

I see the merits of PR but there are also dangers in a dominant party forming a coalition with nobodies and ruling unrestricted for decades. In a system where voters actually voted on the issues and not tribal grounds then PR would be perfect.

If a Government has gone on too long then FPTP generally ensures a new one. There are merits to that.

The Labour Party has not represented the genuine working class in a long time.

Johnson won a landslide in 2019 because the genuine working class believed in what he had to say. It was all nonsense of course, Johnson perfected coming across well to voters whilst being completely out of his depth, but it was pretty clear evidence that the Labour Party of Eddie Izzard, David Lammy, Emily Thornberry and others offers nothing to the blue collar these days, despite Starmer's efforts to purge it of the biggest loonies like Corbyn.

I've argued before that the basic instincts of the vast majority of genuine working class people (as opposed to welfare class) are small c conservative. They are generally accepting of skilled immigration but not uncontrolled immigration. They expect those who do migrate to integrate and obey the law. They don't mind being taxed but not too much and they hate seeing it wasted. They have aspirations towards earning more, having a nicer house and a better life for their children. Overall, they prefer the Government not to bother them too much. That stands for people who have historically voted Blue and Red IMO, and both sides have let them down badly on every point for decades.

Every single recent by-election in England at least has seen the needle barely twitch on the Labour vote. Hardly anyone is swapping from Conservative to them. They're just not voting Conservative. Different story in Scotland perhaps where disdain for the SNP has people looking for alternatives.

It'll be interesting to see the cumulative vote totals after the election to see where, if anywhere outside Scotia, Labours vote has increased.
