A heavy defeat at table topping run away leaders Hornchuch CC has inevitably dented hopes of title glory, but the exceptionally youthful Colchester & East Essex CC First XI remain upbeat as they return to Castle Park this weekend (Saturday 08/07) to host Hutton CC.
It is the half-way point of the season, so plenty to play for. However, the fixture clashes with the U’s First pre-season fixture. Suggestion…..
Play at Castle Park starts at 11.00 and is scheduled to end at 19.10, but is usually later due to over rate allowances. The bar is open throughout. So why not do both, catching the first and last cricket sessions with your footie fix in between? Admission is free, and parking available.
Today, until Thursday, Castle Park welcomes Essex Second XI in a county championship fixture against Hampshire. After yesterday’s T20 glory, both counties will be cock a hoop and have named a strong squad full of red ball first team experience. The last such fixture established a number of batting records and once again, award winning groundsman, Jez Sadler, has produced a belter of a pitch. The Essex players love to come to the ‘Park, and it is a shame that the economics don’t favour a return of the First XI Festival, but that conversation continues. Fantastic entertainment at Castle Park today as Guy Haines (111) and Kiwi Adi Ashok (71 not out) smashed 170 in a second wicket partnership at better than a run a ball. CEEECC overtook Hutton’s 220 to attain a comfortable win with an arrogant six for Charlie Allison’s first scoring shot. To be fair, Hutton’s innings was ponderous, but the many U’s fans attending later in the afternoon missed that tedium as they instead watched our boys score four at Maldon & Tiptree. Looking at the bar receipts, they had a whale of a time. You are always welcome guys. Free admission, cheap real ale. | | | |
