A brilliant hundred and six wickets for Kiwi Adi Ashok ensured a crushing victory over Loughton CC at the weekend. Essex and recently Glamorgan Second XI batter, Joe MacGregor plundered yet another fifty, and eighteen year old Essex II’s batter Charlie Allison, smashed 33 after his midweek hundred for the County. Nothing remarkable about Charlie’s total, but it included five enormous sixes to take CEECC to a massive 320 for five declared. Loughton fell 166 short. With Chelmsford CC taking only 20 points and Brentwood losing, with 25 points from a win batting first, CEECC leapfrog back into second place in the Hamro Foundation Essex Premier League, whilst closing the gap on league leaders, Hornchurch CC that could only manage a draw. Now the competition is really hotting up, with CEECC well placed before we return to the 50 over format where they excel. We usually struggle in the longer (120 over, declaration) form of the game, but not this season.
This is (IMHO) THE best Colchester XI I have witnessed at Castle Park in two decades, and that includes watching England’s Reece Topley and New Zealand’s Tom Blundell. I predict Adi Ashok and Charlie Allison both have full international honours ahead, Ashok having already represented his country at U19 and A level. Charlie is just sensational in white/pink ball cricket and is yet to leave school.
The First XI return to Castle Park this coming Saturday to face third placed Chelmsford CC. Free admission, bar open all afternoon, what is not to like before and after the footy?
Then don’t forget, 3rd to 6th August, the Colchester Cricket and Beer Festival. I have just seen the beer and cider list and over 90% are real ales that I have not previously tasted, which is the real deal when it comes to beer tasting events. Add craft ales from Two Brews and the First XI against currently third placed Brentwood CC, the “Silver Ashes”, and sensational covers band Cushti on the Saturday evening after the U’s beat Swindon at home. It’s going to be a blast!

I should imagine that both Charlie Allison and Ali Zeb ( 150 plus for Wanstead on Saturday ) are possible replacements for Dan Lawrence at Essex.
There can't be many players around who could come in and hit five sixes from a cold start out of 33! I too think Charlie Allison could go on and play at a high level. And Ali Zeb as well. These are two of the best young players in the country.

Agree Ray. I personally suspect Essex are lining up Ali Zeb for red ball, and Charlie Allison for white ball, but I believe both are still at school! It is crazy that Charlie has been prevented from playing for CEECC until last weekend because he had to play school cricket! He was 12th Man for the Essex First XI at Blackpool earlier this week. Shame he didn’t play in the T20 final, but his 33 with 5 sixes was perhaps a message to the selectors. I have never seen an innings like it. | | | |

Opportunities to arise, 50 cup games with seniors signed up for 16.4 franchise. Rookie contracts could be signed. Seems like they are already under the ECCC radar. Clearly need the next grade up from Essex Premier League .
The current top guns look impressive at times but still lack experience and consistency.

Just caught the final two hours of Essex Over 60's v Surrey Over 60's in a 45 over match at Castle Park. Surrey won a close fought match.
We were almost treated to some boxing too as players squared up to one another. Shame we couldn't find the bell.

I'm not quite sure if the following belongs on here as it is essentially about music.
It does at least have a connection to Colchester & East Essex Cricket Club though.
'Geoff' who is a loyal and valued supporter of the club is looking at musicians and singer songwriters who appear regularly in Colchester with a view to finding someone to perform during the club's beer festival.
He handed me a CD by a singer called Sarah-Louise.
The first thing l noticed was that it was recorded by someone known to myself for work we produced around 15 years ago.
Mark Wickenden had a recording studio behind Rollerworld back then but he is now based in Norfolk.
So l'm up to Track 7 and it's ok.....then Track 8! This is a duet performed with Preston Barnes of a Lady Gaga song 'Shallow'.
This made quite an impact on me!
I googled Preston Barnes as l expected to find something interesting. And l did. Respect and admiration for that back story.
I have had email exchanges with Sarah tonight as l think she would be very well suited to material like Chicken Shack's 'I'd rather go blind' - with Christine Perfect ( later McVie ) on vocals.
She has quite a workload currently but if she is able to make it to the Castle Park, l think her work would come over well with the acoustic that marquees offer. | | | |

Charlie Allinson signs Essex rookie contract until end 2023 .
The right-hander has been on the Essex age-group pathway from under-9 level, and in July 2018, aged just 13, he returned figures of 2/24 from seven overs in a nine-wicket victory over Norfolk in a 50-over match.
In club cricket, Allison plays for his hometown team of Colchester and East Essex, and last year hit 249 runs at 41.50 and took 13 wickets at 20.84 in the Essex Cricket League Premier Division.
Charlie Allinson signs Essex rookie contract until end 2023.
Allison will wear number 56, and after committing his immediate future to the Club, he said: “I’m thrilled to sign this contract with Essex, which is a huge step forward in my career.
“With a competition like the One Day Cup, which gives developing players more of a chance to make their first-team debut than ever before, just around the corner, it feels like a really exciting time to come on board.
