CEECC’S Adi Ashok gets full Blackcaps call-up! 06:06 - Jul 20 with 1073 viewsnoah4x4

Colchester and East Essex CC has a proud record of producing internationals, such as Neil Foster, Reece Topley and Ben Foakes, and now Adi Ashok has been called up by the full New Zealand T20 squad for its tour of UAE stepping up from the A squad.

No surprise to me that Adi is in the NZ squad. He looks an exceptional player and he was in the nets again on Tuesday striking the ball with ease.

This reminds me of Kiwi Tom Blundell. Tom came over as a young batsman / off spinner. He would turn up at Castle Park on a bike from his lodgings in Cowdray Avenue most days. He would practice for hours on end.

He appeared to learn wicket keeping while at Castle Park and was helped by Colchester bowler Ben Stephens who he was staying with.

I remember following his test debut as a wicket keeper batsman on Teletext, coming in at number 8 in the batting order
his score was going up and up through the night ( UK time ).

Without checking the stats l seem to recall NZ were 8 wickets down and Tom was just past the 50 mark. He made a century and l believe he was the first New Zealand batsman to score a hundred on debut coming in as low in the order as number 8!

Let's hope Adi goes on to emulate this. ( Though more likely at Number 3 ).

While l mention the name of Ben Stephens, it was Ben who did so much amazing work with Colchester's Charlie Allison when Charlie was not much taller than the cricket bat.

Charlie has made a big impression at Essex and it has not gone unnoticed that he is polite and extremely good natured.

That was a bit of A shok.

The weather forecast is not good for Saturday, so he may have already played his last game for Colchester and East Essex CC.

Not so Mick, albeit the weather doesn’t look that promising for the Chelmsford fixture, which may be the last opportunity to see him for free at Castle Park.

He is scheduled to play away at Chingford CC (home club of Dan Lawrence and Jamie Porter) then makes his last appearance at Castle Park on 5th August versus Brentwood CC, which coincides with the cricket and beer festival where a £3 admission charge will apply, but you do get a souvenir glass and programme.

I have just seen the beer and cider list and local real ale enthusiasts should be licking their lips. The initial 30 casks are an excellent selection and 26 will be new scratches for me. 15 ciders, plus a selection of craft ales supplied by Two Brews increase the appeal.

On the Saturday night, Cushti, THE ultimate covers band provide the (free) entertainment, and Sunday, the Silver Ashes concludes the visit of the tourists that have been here taking on “England” at multiple levels beyond the primary Male and Female Tests. National anthems, Jerusalem, the atmosphere will be electric.

I can claim some credit for Tom Blundell’s wicket keeping success Ray….

I retired from wicket keeping at the end of season 2012 and in that season, I took more wicket keeping victims for Colchester than Blundell and Foakes combined. To be truthful, Blundell was then an off spinner and Foakes was still a junior. But had Blundell not taken the gloves that Sunday……

Unfortunately, Adi didn't make the team today. New Zealand T20 won by 19 runs. However, it sounds like he will get his chance before the UAE tour is over, and then he is back in the UK with the mainstream squad, and who knows where from then? His primary leg-spin rival, Ish Sodhi, got smashed for 29 in 15 balls tonight by the Trent Rockets.

Sadly, Adi won't be able to assist Colchester & East Essex CC again this season and we have also lost Charlie Allison and Mackenzie Jones to Essex CCC and Scotland. Charlie has hit 70 and 85 in the Metro Bank one day competition and shown his class. On Saturday CEECC visit Wanstead and Snaresbrook, then finish the season with Hadleigh & Thundersley, then league leaders, Hornchurch CC both visiting Castle Park. A live stream is always available on the Colchester and East Essex Play Cricket Match Centre.

Thanks to everybody that supported the Cricket & Beer Festival. What a shame we lost three days of cricket due to the awful weather. But the Sunday 'Silver Ashes' lived up to expectation.

Remarkably in the recent Leicestershire v Essex Metro Bank cup fixture, the top scorers for both sides were born in Colchester.
Sol Budinger’s maiden century in any format of senior cricket led Leicestershire Foxes to a fifth victory in six matches and Charlie Allinson got his highest first score 85 for Essex.
Uncertain if it has happened previously, but could be repeated in the forthcoming fixture against Surrey .

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

I have just met some very special visitors to Castle Park.

Horses. They are staying for the weekend and are located on the field by the lake behind Riverside Estate.

It is one of the most stunning sights l have ever been greeted with in the area. We are more used to watching drug deals taking place around here on a Friday night. And most nights.

There are about twelve horses spread across two fenced off enclosures ( beware electric current from fence if stroking them ).

They are here for an historical event relating to 'The Siege of Colchester' on Saturday and Sunday which appears to be a free to the public.

I will be paying them another visit early tomorrow morning.

Sorry to report that just a few hundred metres away, and currently residing in hotels along North Station Road there are estimated to be more than twenty drug dealers operating from these establishments ( which might explain why police and emergency services have been called to the area nearly every day in the past month ).

Adi finally gets to play this afternoon. Yet to bat or bowl, but congratulations!

Both Ben and Charlie Allison in todays Essex Metro Cup Team

Mackenzie Jones absent playing for Scotland U19.

A second consecutive defeat for Colchester & East Essex CC yesterday means no chance of an Essex Premier League title this year. However, remain joint second, with Brentwood CC that also have player absences supporting Essex CCC in the One Day Cup while Essex regulars are playing for franchise teams in the Hundred for which Essex fans have zero affinity. It’s great to see them taking their opportunity but the Hundred severely impacts on domestic cricket including local premier leagues.

CEECC finish with two home games at Castle Park; Hadleigh & Thundersley, then Champions Hornchurch CC. Hopefully, CEECC might be back to full strength for the latter. Free admission and bar open all afternoon.

Edit, Adi now has his first International wicket! His previous six came at Loughton CC. What a talent!

The hundred destroys the domestic summer cricket seasons but suspect here to stay as seems to generate a lot of money for individuals
However the one day cup is now a nonsense competition
Hopefully the b9ys turning out for Ess3x will benefit in the coming years.

Adi didn't get to bat, and he took 1 for 28 in his 4 overs.
