I reckon, to date, I have played or scored over 4,500 days of cricket at levels from recreational to International First Class and that probably embraces witnessing the fall of over 37,000 wickets and until today, I have never seen a batsman “timed out”.
What happened today is without precedence in International cricket, and is not (IMHO) in the Spirit of Cricket, albeit correct under Law 40.1.1
To clarify, MCC Laws say the batter must be ready to receive his first ball within three minutes, but ICC World Cup Playing Conditions reduce that to two minutes. Angelo Mathews was on the field of play, but as he put on his helmet the strap broke. A delay occurred whereby the helmet was replaced, Bangladesh appealed and the batter was given out.
Similarly, for forty years, I never witnessed a Mankad dismissal whereby a bowler runs out a non- striking batsman backing up. Instead, a polite warning would be given, but ever since Jos Buttler was run out by Ravi Ashwin, this has become more common in the recreational game, especially in junior cricket. Today, millions of youngsters witnessed the routine legitimisation of Rule 40.1.1 and I am sure we will witness many tearful moments as kids struggling to swap over limited supplies of protective kit are similarly timed out.
Given time penalties for slow over rates and fielding delays, there may be some justification, but today, I felt the Spirit of Cricket finally died. So sad.

Too much time wasting in both football and cricket.
As far as today's event he rather brought it on himself. Three minutes had been reduced to two minutes for this event so surely everyone would have been aware that authorities had done it for a reason.
How long does it take to get from pavilion to the crease.
Malfunctioning equipment is no excuse. He had time to check everything and in terms of a faulty helmet he could certainly seen out the spinners over, then sorted it. Stupid.
Hope this enables less delays in all short forms of cricket, if not even 4 and 5 day matches. |  | | |

Again, my concern is that in junior cricket, a team might be unable to have multiple players padded up due to a lack of adequate equipment. This sets a horrible precedence of poor sportsmanship.
Where a batter is timed out, it is a wholly disproportionate punishment compared to that imposed for slow over rates by the fielding side. A five run penalty for each minute late over the stated limit might be more reasonable? | | | |
