Seen this discussed a little in other threads. For me, I prefer Diakete in the defensive midfield role. Faurlin is not the quickest or strongest at breaking up counter-attacks. Personally, I think when the opposition break away and they see Diakete ahead of them it slows down the counter-attack because they are intimidated by his strength and speed.
The only drawback is Diakete learning when to slide in and to make sure he times it right!
This allows Faurlin to do more damage with his intricate passing further upfield...

Agree that the question should be whether it's Granero or Diakite that sits deep with Faurlin as a double pivot.
I'm more inclined towards Diakite attacking because he's less of a wildcard there than he is in a purely defensive role. But he is still a wildcard. Granero is a cooler head that can dictate the play from deep but obviously he is easier outmuscled as West Ham proved.
On the other hand you could argue we need Granero further forward to better knit the midfield and attack together as a unit. Diakite, Hoilett and Taarabt would effectively be three roaming free roles behind Zamora. Could work but you suspect more through luck and individuality than judgement and teamwork.
Ultimately the suspicion is that this is something that will best iron itself out over time, but unfortunately the team is not sufficiently functional right now to work out these kinks calmly as we go along. Like I've said before, this team is a real Rubik's cube. |  | | |

I should probably also add that whoever plays where, part of the problem is always going to be a "you do that job and he does this job" approach. What MH really needs to work on is the whole team's pressing as a unit and its transitions from defence to attack and vice versa. | | | |
