Check The Grimes
Check The Grimes

Dale manager Steve Eyre has made his first signing since becoming Dale manager by beating off competition from a number of other clubs to sign Ashley Grimes.

Striker Grimes came to the attention of many a lower league scout after a blistering spell last season with Lincoln City last season where he grabbed 17 goals in just 25 games during a loan spell from Millwall. That wasn't enough for Millwall to offer him a new deal, and he was released at the back end of 2010-11.

Colchester and Shrewsbury Town were just two clubs who had pinned their hopes on securing the services of Swinton born Grimes, but the chance to work again with Dale boss Steve Eyre played a part in persuading Grimes to come to Spotland.

If you're after omens, then Ashley Grimes started off at the same boys club  in Salford (Barr Hill FC) where a certain Tony Ellis started his fledgling career many moons ago.

On paper, a good signing. And a potential foil for CoG.

Seems Eyresy's contacts are paying off already. Well, that and how loaded we are (relatvively) at present!

The type of player we missed last year (like Dagnell or Le Fondre) and think he will be ideal for COG.

Are we due money from Barnsley for Hillcroft?

Judging by the quality of his his first signing I look forward to seeing who we can attract next

id be a little hesitant to call him a great goal scorer but ill give him time to prove himself i am worried he might be another john shaw lots of promise who did not deliver , looking at his record it abit worrying that the goals he did score were mainly consoltion goals in alot of game were teams were so far ahead they proberbly helped him get in the net . so lets be abit warey

Do consolation goals not count the same or something?

Consolation goals or not, he still scored 17 goals in 25 games, which to me is a pretty damn decent record. Just because a team may be in the lead, doesn't mean that they will make it easier for the other team score, as you suggested. They would want to try and keep a clean sheet, so he would still have to work for his goals.

I agree with RAFC - what we need is someone with a goalscorers instinct which is something that is seriously lacking in the present squad.

I think the boy has some potential, looking through his history. Hes been at some decent clubs but only really fired for Lincoln, (good though it was). I think he's at the right club to flourish and probably under the right manager to get the best out of him. bonus that they've worked together too. Onwards and upwards!
