Fright Stripes! Fans give the new kit the thumbs down?
Fright Stripes! Fans give the new kit the thumbs down?

Leeds United unveiled their latest kit which will debut at home to Brighton on Saturday. Although the White Stripes "Seven Nation Army" has had an airing of late in honour of new boss Brian McDermott, judging by the comments on the Yorkshire Evening Post website the new kit might not catch on as well due to the introduction of what the marketing men call "retro style stripes".

Leeds did indeed wear blue and white stripes between 1919 and September 1934, when they reverted to gold and blue halved shirts. The famous switch to all white came in 1960 which depending on what book you read Don Revie ordered the change in honour of the all conquering Real Madrid side of the time but in Jack Charlton's 1996 Autobiography "Wor Jackie" reckoned it was to do with white being the easiest colour to pick out team-mates on the park!

Although we incorporated a blue stripe into our 2009/10 kit, the double blue stripe trimmed with a thin yellow stripe running vertically down the centre of the chest has its critics and a common theme is that blue stripes should be seen only at Huddersfield and Hillsborough.

Posting on the Yorkshire Evening Post website comments board, Wurzelco called it "the worst kit for sometime", Le tour de whites likened it to a "packet of Embassy cigarettes" and Malcolm1947 wrote "If you like blue stripes then Town or Wednesday are for you!"

However Rex wrote that he was more bothered "who would be wearing it next season", Eirewhite praised it calling it "fresh and modern" and Steve1962 reckons "the kit looks great" but they seem to be in the minority.

So what do you think? It goes on sale on Saturday morning, will you be rushing out to buy it and wear it with pride? Or will you not be seen dead in it?
