End of season do - £65!! 17:59 - Mar 19 with 46799 viewsChaffRAFC

https://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/2018/march/event-gala-dinner--awards-night/

Utterly ludicrous in my book. Bollocks to a meal and all that stuff.

Very good chance this will be the end of season do after a relegation from League One!

Genuinely hope nobody goes in the hope that the club finally take a step back and look at the decisions they make!

And they wonder why I think "Team Rochdale" is dead.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Didn't notice that bit.

Have all those people/groups/relations of those who awards are named after been contacted to confirm they all agree to it?

Can the Trust confirm that they have agreed a) for their award to be presented on this evening, and b) that they have agreed for someone else to present their award that is presented on behalf of their members?

If the answer to either of these is "yes" (which I don't know), can they confirm that they will review this decision or any impending decision on the two above questions ahead of consulting all their members?

Again, these will be asked at the Trust desk if necessary.

But it's at the town Hall you oik.

As it stands my youngest daughter couldn’t attend.
All she has talked about for weeks is getting some photos from the night to use in her leavers presentation from primary school.
I remember the excitement on her face when Steve Collis gave her his shirt at Colchester,
I remember 2014 vividly players and fans as one,all singing together all pissed together...
Those responsible for this should be forcibly sat down and have the history of this club rammed into them..
A Sportsman’s dinner with Stelling fine, but to totally ruin the highlight of many young Dale fans Year is nothing short of disgraceful.
Team Rochdale is definitely extinct.

Will I be going £65 a head?
I’d rather eat my own Shyte...

Its all well and good looking more professional but as a family club, we've always had a good connection between the fans and the staff and pricing us out of an event that traditionally is free is a joke.

My lad loved the awards do last season and now I cant take him because a) I cant afford it and b) hes not even allowed because its restricted to 16 and over. A club with family values excluding families? You couldn't make it up.

The fact that the club liased with the supporters trust, heard their warnings on opinion and did it anyway speaks volumes.

There are other ways to look more professional.

We have sold out.

And this is the final nail in the coffin for Team Rochdale given their never ending own goals that Shun has illustrated.

They simply couldn't give two shits about the fans.

But Chaff, this 'disconnect' has been going on for more years than you've been on this earth. Years ago the fans were right at the very heart of the club.

They (we) used to mingle freely with all the players (from both teams) after the match in the bar, then the club introduced a 'ticket only' admission system, aimed at professional, well-heeled people, then they started the 'Executive Club' which required an annual fee to join and to retain the same entry rights. Then prices steadily increased to a level where people felt aggrieved and didn't renew. Now, 30 years on, we have 'executive boxes' that the average loyal fan will never be able to afford and unless you 'cough up' a good few quid, you'll never see the inside of the lounge.

People were pi$$ed off then, as they are now. Fans used to do things for the club, as they do now, never expecting (or wanting) their deeds to be recognised or rewarded. Just as they do now. People complained, just as they do now. It made little difference. There are twice as many paying supporters today as there were then.

Slowly but surely, the distance between the fans and the heirarchy at the club has changed and has become more remote. The image of the club and the professionalism of the club has changed in every respect. There were days when some supporters club members were invited to travel to away matches on the team coach (for a nominal charge to offset costs). I did it several times, to Aldershot, Colchester, Southend, Exeter to name a few. When did that last happen ? Things change, attitudes change, personnel change, decisons are made which aren't popular, but we're still supporters of the club. We all still grumble.

Many changes took place and others were initiated long before David Bottomley showed up, so I don't see how or why his name is relevant in what has been a long, slow and evolving process, which has now arrived at this npew chapter.

I can see good reasons why the club would want to hold an awards function at the Town Hall, but I also agree that the young supporters will miss out on what has traditionally been a great end of season event and one which they have looked forward to with great anticipaton. I still think they could be accomodated in some way after he last game, so that they could all meet the team and staff.

Yes, the club should retain some kind of event for the kids

What you and others are saying has been said many times down the years. Whilst I agree with you, the corporate age has arrived.

I don't think anyone at the club sets out to intentionally aggravate the fans, least of all, the Chairman, but too few of them, have ever stood on the terraces in the pi$$ing rain, or travelled on public transport to games, or had to cadge a lift off a mate, or arrange for time off work to get to a game. They are too comfortable in their corporate world, in their carpeted suites, and admiring their cut glass decanters and single malt whiskies.

'Twas ever thus.....

Unfortunately, supporters don't have as much influence and aren't as important as some think they are. Personally, I support the club. I attend all home games, buy a season ticket, join the Dale Trust and buy a Golden Gamble ticket. Away games when I feel like it. That all costs enough. After that, they've had it.

And that's why they'll be consistently ridiculed and called out for things like #teamrochdale. No one disputes change happens, it's whether you accept it all or you choose to say what could be better. Something you've done, which is exactly the point.

There is no #teamrochdale unless they accept that fans have a right to that opinion and take on board those views. Like any business would within the corporate age.

Wait until we see what they try to do with Season Tickets. I am not holding out any hope that they will understand what to do if we are relegated. They have a chance to fook that up beyond all recognition as they did 2 years ago (Mr Bottomley was the scapegoat then).

The answer to this is simple. Just don't buy the tickets and the club will get a message. As somebody that attended a game recently in the lounge, believe me we have a lot of spare seats in the exec suite. The club doesn't have a queue of corporates lining up to put their money into the club.

But at the same time, there are probably individual supporters who would take the opportunity to buy a lounge ticket if thet were priced reasonably, but they wil be aimed at businessmen, rather than 'terrace folk'. Therein lies the problem.

It's OK trying to maximise income, all businesses have the same objective, but the awards night will now be seen in a different light to a match day, aimed at a different clientele, with the club wooing a different audience.

For the first time ever wooing the wrong audience.

I know of one terrace fan built his own business and was royally shafted at the Spurs game who will not be renewing for the first time in 10 years.

Yes, I heard some unsavoury stories about charging 8-year old kids £95 a time for a plate of chicken dippers and chips (or similar). No excuse for that at all. That's where the club needs to improve it's perceived 'grasping nature' trying to prise every halfpenny piece from every palm that walks through the door.

The frustrating thing about this is that they won't make a fortune doing it either. If they manage to sell 300 tickets - by the time they pay for dinner, champagne reception, Jeff's fees and other bits, they will be lucky to make £9,000 at best. Why piss everybody off for such little financial gain? Are things really that bad in the commercial bucket this year?

Who makes this shit up?

Never been to one of these events, and wouldn't go if they put free ale on, but clearly there are now people at the club who think this is the way forward. Perhaps they've had enough of adult fans and their kids having full access to players and staff? Easiest way to do that is price most people out of it, then sit back and smirk at the reaction

Just one other point. I made an issue out of directors smirking at the fans forum, and got called out for it by certain individuals, who now see fit to protest ever so loudly in this thread about this move by the club, which is only a reflection of the same issue

Your last point is telling Its not hard to come to the conclusion from reading this forum that many fans have worked out that their is a difference in supporting the team and supporting the club. While fans will remain faithful in support of the team the club itself can get fukced.

I was always under the impression that the end of season awards event, was for the fans. Perhaps I am deluded. Many of the awards are from the fans and some named in honor of deceased fans whose families wanted to an award to go to, usually, up and coming players or people who have made outstanding contributions. Since the turn of the century, the club has been on a slippery slope off the field. If it hadn`t been for the likes of Colin Garlick (it was his remit for which he was paid, I well know), Frances, who puts an enormous amount of time and effort into the club, just for the love of it and many others too numerous to mention, the club would be in a sorry state. As it is, someone in their wisdom has decided, we the fans are dispensible, to be replaced by people with deep pockets, who turn up once a season, usually during a successful cup run and whom the board seems keen to suck up to. For a club of our size and in a town like ours, ravaged by umemployment and low paid work, the way forward is to show loyalty and to let it be seen that the fans really are the lifeblood of Rochdale AFC, because without us there would be no football league club in this town and the sooner "these" people understand it the better. The centenary year was a shambles and it seems those in charge cannot count or subtract. I wouldn`t want to pay £65 to listen to a Hartlepool fan, who reads results/latest scores in an overly excited fashion to make it seem important. I would rather listen to Steve Whitehall, Peter Madden or someone who actually has an affinity with the club, not because he`s a mate of Russ and will do it cheap.
Recently while visiting up here from Somerset, my cousin wanted to look round the ground and a gate was open as we passed by. We stood in the gateway to look in and were suddenly treated like terrorists looking to blow the place up, by some jobsworth whose idea of customer service was archaic and embarrassing. We are not Manchester United, we are/were friendly Rochdale AFC, a family club where everyone is welcome. #R.I.P. TeamRochdale

Hill tell regulars to not turn up after we fail to beat Mk.
We don’t have or sign a decent striker.
Hill has a pop at fans on the back of a win against Peterborough.
Hill tell the fans he’s not bothered if we get relegated as he knows how much revenue he brings to the club.
The club tell the fans the kids season tickets are free even though you have to pay an admin fee to receive one.
The directors smirk and openly show disdain at fans st the forums.
Directors tell supporters to fook off and not bother turning up again.
For weeks on end our pitch is a fooking disgraceful laughing stock. (Which the fans helped put right to get the Millwall game on)

And after that catalogue of shite they reward themselves with a black tie event and Jeff Stelling (who will no doubt bore the tits off everyone with tales about Kammy and the rest of the “lads” on sly sports news) the directors really are reminding me of some shit soviet era politburo made up of old farts who don’t realise how shit things have been and seek to actually reward their own failure. Ive been a season ticket holder since I was thirteen ( I’m now 27) I won’t be renewing this year and it’s nowt to do with the what’s going on on the pitch. I don’t give a fook if we get relegated now will make the awards do at the town hall look even more cringeworthy. Why would you organise this shit when the chances are we will go down? Total lack of self awareness.

Exactly. There's nothing at all wrong with them having a dinner as an event, if they want to celebrate Wembley/the 30th or 31st anniversary of avoiding relegation/using less envelopes in the office this season, that's great. There is ZERO reason to take the awards night away from the club and its supporters (especially the younger ones)

For a start they'll lose out on all the bar takings!

Your last sentence makes a good point.

The season after we finally buy back the stadium, with all the talk of making money from our newly reacquired asset, we hold the awards do at the town hall?

I would really love to know how much profit they make from hiring Stelling, (presumably) hiring the town hall, buying the champagne etc, compared to how much the stadium bar has made in the past few years.

This is just daft from the club.

Fair enough £65 for a three course meal with champagne in the town hall with a public speaker isn’t too bad, but why does it have to be in the place of our traditional end of season do which many look forward too?

Also why are we celebrating Wembley? That for me only makes sense if it was the cup final or the playoffs, we did very well to get a replay against spurs, but celebrating playing the replay seems a bit silly to me.

Days like this one weren't supposed to happen to Rochdale.
