Your favourite game that didn't mean much 14:35 - Nov 14 with 5760 viewsForever_and_a_Dale

Interested to know what peoples favourite matches are that they have attended but aren't all that special in reality. Dale or non-Dale.

Watching big Pete rise like a salmon to head home the equaliser in injury time was magnificent

The nine man win at Turf Moor. Three abiding memories: the John Francis assault on Jimmy Graham; big Alex Jones coming off the bench to put John FrAncis into the wall, and Keith Welch in the nets keeping everything out.
A couple of questions for those who went. Was this Andy Milner 's first game for Dale, or was that the previous season? I remember him turning the Burnley fullback inside out in his first match. And who, besides Alex Jones, was sent off?

Yes, it was Milner's debut.

The two red cards were Steve O'Shaughnessy and Willie Burns.

Alex Jones wasn't with us then; he was sent-off in the 4-1 FA Cup loss at Burnley in December 1993, along with Andy Thackeray and The Clarets' future Dale defender Mark Monington.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

I remember going to Halifax on Boxing Day in either 1970 or 1971 when we won 4-1 and Dennis Butler scored a hat-trick.
There was also a crazy game that we won at Wrexham in Simpson's first month in charge. August Bank Holiday 2002.
I actually thought that we could go one step better than the play-offs the previous season on the way back from that one.

I think the 4-1 at Halifax (good shout btw) was 1971, since we lost there the first season after promotion when we were riding high in the league, and it burst our bubble

On reflection I'm sure you're right DA.
We'd gone top of the league by beating Mansfield on the Monday night I think and there was plenty of away support at the Shay that day.

There was, a really dank afternoon over the border, and very thick fog coming back over Blackstone Edge, just crawling along

But on reflection (too), the first season after promotion was 69/70, so Boxing Day in the second season would've been 1970 after all!

What a nightmare TVOS - the memories are all over the place then.

So if I've got this right, when Jimmy Graham was badly fouled was much later than when Welch kept everything out? Clearly I've mixed things up. Maybe Welch's heroics were a 1-0 in adversity (also with fewer than 11 men) when John Bowden scored for us? 1991 perhaps?

In that case, who was the keeper in the nine man game, 'cos Welch had gone to Brizzle C by then?

Fulham in the league cup back in 2001, one of my very first Dale memories and remember being heartbroken and crying in the family stand. First real footballing heartbreak for me.

The Keith Welch Show was 20th January 1990. (1-0 to Dale)

The Jimmy Graham Nightmare was 4th December 1993. (4-1 to Burnley)

The Jon Bowden Game was 21st September 1991. (1-0 to Dale)

Thank you for sorting it all out.
So many memorable days out to Turf Moor - so badly scrambled by ageing memory....

My abiding memory of that game was the Burnley crowd turning nasty at the end of the game, Never been so glad to get to the car and away in one piece. I also recall a trickle of people arriving at the Deerplay pub turning into a tsunami as the returning Dale fans realised that it was open and they were in need of a drink.

Yes it was boxing day 1970 - we were struggling a bit in the league but already drawn first division coventry in the cup 3rd round. Halifax were doing pretty good so this win came out of nowhere and Dennis Butler was found to have been playing with a hairline fracture of his leg I think. Couldnt have been that bad though cos he scored the winner against coventry when the game was eventually played.

Chesterfield away 2014. 2 goals in 90+ mins to salvage a draw. What an amazing outcome. Don’t think I’ve calmed down since that. Remember some bloke filming the away end wish I could see that footage.

Charlton away when Calvin scored the winner against his old club at 0-1. Made the train journey there full of cockneys bellowing they’d win 5-0 so much funnier.
