Today is the 45th anniversary of what could be described as the saddest day in our history. Rock bottom of division 3 with only 2 wins all season, a ground that was an embarresment, and 588 supporters turn up on a Tuesday afternoon to so see us lose 2 0 to Cambridge who were also relegated that season.
So, to those who come on here and constantly moan about the manager, players and club in general, try and imagine what it was like back then and thank your lucky stars. |  | | |  |

I don’t post on here often but I’d like to think I’m not in the “those who come on here and constantly moan about the manager, players and club in general” camp.
I appreciate the 70s and 80s were a fallow period for the club. I’ve heard a lot from older supporters including those in my own family about how grim and frankly embarrassing it was. I guess I’m grateful that people stuck by the club then.
But I personally don’t see the need to compare something nigh on 50 years ago to today and use it as a stick to beat those wanting inrpvement on and off the field. History doesn’t always repeat itself and the past shouldn’t be used as a weight or an influence on the club. I put it in the same bracket as fans of clubs who still dine out on successes of yesteryear and see themselves as better than they actually are in some way (plenty of those who have dropped into L1 or played us in cups over recent years). |  | | |

I was at that game it was awful. Makes you realise how far we have come from those dark day, in following seasons, which were not much better and if it wasn’t for the efforts of the supporters club, the fighting fund and others we wouldn’t be here. | | | |

I remember this season well, 1973/74 Oldham promotion season and Dale rock bottom with 2 wins all season. The game was played at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon so obviously very limited availability due to schools / work commitments. That same season, OAFC played Cambridge at Boundary Park on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a crowd of 10,000+ the Chaddy End did a walk on with school ties!! In those days, the FA Cup was held in great esteem by fans, a league game wouldn't have attracted anywhere near the same.
I would have thought this was the worst season in Dale's history but, from a positive perspective, just look how far Dale have come both on and off the pitch since those days. Good luck for rest of season fellas. | | | |

trouble with that season was we wanted a youth policy and appointed a youth team manager as boss, Walter Joyce, he got fid of experienced players and put youngster in many who were either not ready or good enough hence defeats every week. I know we bring youngster in now but this was wholesale, still this is the past and we shouldn’t dwell on it now | | | |

In defence of Walter Joyce (and you don't often see those words together in the same sentence) he was brought in by the board after they sacked Dick Connor to oversee a sea change in club philosophy from playing seasoned professionals to a youth policy.
he tried to do it immediately though.
Cue the exit of all decent players with indecent haste instead of a season of transition.
By February all confidence had been knocked out of the team.
I too was at this match, shivering in the Main Stand paddock.
I can remember a pile of pies being given away rather than bin them.
This was certainly a low ebb in the club's history but I also remember the last two months of the 1979/80 season when we were stuck at the bottom of Division Four with Bob Stokoe trying to fine the entire team after one defeat for "not trying". | | | |

Indeed. In the grand scheme of things, there are very few out and out moaners on here (those that do frequent the forum are often rightly put down and ignored). The vast majority of level headed posters have aired their grievances and gripes in a well thought out and reasonable manner over the past few months or so |  | | |

He was a very nice bloke, and no doubt put everything he had into the job - he was just not cut out to be a manager of a team of full time professionals. He did great things with Oldham's youth team. Of course after being fired from the Dale he never managed in the football league again. right man wrong job. | | | |

I've been supporting Dale since 2003 when I was 4 so I have been very lucky with the vast majority of what I've seen and I can't really comment on what happened in the grim days but I do agree that although we have been horrendous for most of our existence, that is no excuse for the present day and we should always be looking forward and not thinking 'oh it could be worse, could be 1974.' |  | | |
