Women's World Cup 12:02 - Jun 12 with 10889 viewsD_Alien

Might be passing many people by but i've started watching, with the England v Scotland game. The skill levels have certainly improved and some of the passing & moving (trying hard to avoid euphemisms here) is on a par with the men's game. Certainly, more entertaining than watching the England performances in the Nations Cup

One talking point that's emerged is the US 13-0 trouncing of Thailand. Some commentators are calling it "disrespectful" that the US really went to town right up to the final whistle. I beg to differ. It's a competitive game in the World Cup - why should any sports team ease up (apart from saving their legs for the next game) if they don't have to? In my opinion, it'd be more disrespectful of an opponent to just start passing the ball around without trying to score. It's one of the bugbears I had about Hill's tenure - he stated on several occasions that he found going beyond 4-0 "disrespectful". How odd! Great to see the crowd applauding both teams off the pitch at the end

Thailand beat Cambodia 12-0 in a qualifying game, albeit not in front of a worldwide audience, so they can't complain about being hammered, and to their credit they seem to have taken it on the chin

Looking forward to the latter stages of the tournament when it gets serious. England seem competent but will have their work cut out at that stage against teams like the US

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

Beating thailand 13 - 0 and getting some poor media for it what would it have been like if the USA had laboured to a 1-0 victory!
Then the knives would be out in the media..

Just cannot win in the eyes of the media...

My all time favourite Dale player Mr Lyndon Symmonds

There is always the Golden Boot to go for......Morgan of USA looks to have it in the bag already followed by a couple of team mates.

As an aside, there is very little dissent in the women's game and also nothing like as much diving......pretty refreshing?

Thailand beat Cambodia 11-0. The crowd was given out as 100!

Two months later Cambodia beat East Timor 12-0

What goes around comes around....unless you're East Timor and have never won a game!!

I watched the latest game against Argentina. They should have won in a canter but they kept taking the wrong option in front of goal. The one time they got the ball in quickly from a wide position they scored.
When you miss a penalty against 5' 6" tall goalkeeper you're asking for trouble. The kicker telegraphed the direction and it was at a really saveable height. Having said that the ref kept the kicker waiting for ages.
If they're hoping to win the cup they'll have to discover a cutting edge from somewhere. Actually having a pop from distance instead of trying to pass their way into goal would be a start.

There's a certain lack of urgency to the Women's game.....they don't seem to like the"give and go" preferring to beat the opposition player then do it again or run into a wall.

The Yanks and France are far better than our girls so we could do with both of them getting knocked out early....hopefully we will improve as the tournament gets interesting .....at least we are through with a game to spare but need a point to finish top.

Rochdale girl (Syke) Keira Walsh, also plays. Didn’t start yesterday but has been heavily involved recently.

Women's World Cup on 13:30 - Jun 15 with 4225 viewsChaffRAFC

Watched England women for the first time, possibly ever, last night and thought they were easily the better side technically but Argentina were a lot more physical.

Steph Houghton was a rock at the back for England and effectively played midfield as well as centre half. Thought Parris on the wing was poor and made too many poor decisions in possession while her penalty was awful as well.

Best player on the pitch by a distance for England was Bethany Mead on the opposite wing. Caused no end of trouble, set up Greenwood who was fouled for the penalty and put in a sensational cross for Taylor to score a tap in.

Fran Kirby also had a very good game but the Argentine keeper stopped it from being about 6-0, she was immense.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

I think Mead could have started in our first XI down the left last year, based on what I've seen of her so far. Great to watch and drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd. Shades of NML.

From what ive seen of it, which is admittedly just a few minutes, im afraid i just cant take it seriously, despite the BBCs efforts to force it down our throats.

At times the technical side of it is good, passing and movement etc. Problem I personally have (admittedly probably my own fault) is I compare it to men’s football, and a half decent Sunday league team from when I played in the 90’s would have beaten England 7 or 8 nil.

It is an unfair comparison I know, but I just can’t get into watching it at all.

Yes, I think that is the problem, comparing it to the men's game. It's just like men's and woman's tennis, if you compare the two, men's tennis is always going to come out on top, when really they are different games. I've really enjoyed watching this tournament so far. The fact that more mistakes are made makes it even more interesting for me.There have been some poor games and some very good games just like in the men's world cup. I've got to say having watched the USA games they are my favourites. But don't get me started with VAR, I detest it.

Speaking of VAR...

Anyone watching this USA match - I honestly have no idea what "offside" means any more!

You're not alone in that! And even when it is obviously offside, the referee's assistant doesn't put the flag up for an age afterwards!

She's fantastic - Morgan and Rapinoe also. Hard to see England getting past the semi-finals (assuming they deal with their first two knockouts) with the way the bracket has now fallen.

I watched the first half of USA v Sweden last night. The American women are going to be the team to beat. Pace and power, the ball is always kept moving and they use the whole of the pitch in possession. When they lose the ball they work their socks off to win the ball back. They're very good to watch. Weak side of the game as far as I can see is finishing, in spite of the Thailland game. Not enough power in their shots from distance.

Why? It got the officials out of two goal mistakes today and gave them two other chances to fix mistakes. Today’s delays were caused by the disgraceful Cameroon players. The on-pitch officials were so bad maybe robo-ref should have replaced them (not literally). The ‘challenge’ at the end was disgraceful.

Have to agree with every word of this, Var got the decisions right today bar one, that was a red card all day long for that challenge...The Cameroon players were a complete disgrace and I guess it won't be the last they will hear about it, especially the spitting on the arm of the England player in the fist half, England did well to keep their composure and not retaliate today...

Poll: Hill in or out? 2nd referendum.....

2
Women's World Cup on 19:09 - Jun 23 with 2961 viewsmingthemerciless

Well that was shambolic. England got brought down to Cameroons level in the second half and they lost their way. The referee was totally ineffectual and turned a blind eye to a reasonable shout for a penalty and what appeared to be a certain red card in the end.

England need to up their game substantially otherwise they'll be on their way home after the Norway game.
