Women's World Cup 12:02 - Jun 12 with 10881 viewsD_Alien

Might be passing many people by but i've started watching, with the England v Scotland game. The skill levels have certainly improved and some of the passing & moving (trying hard to avoid euphemisms here) is on a par with the men's game. Certainly, more entertaining than watching the England performances in the Nations Cup

One talking point that's emerged is the US 13-0 trouncing of Thailand. Some commentators are calling it "disrespectful" that the US really went to town right up to the final whistle. I beg to differ. It's a competitive game in the World Cup - why should any sports team ease up (apart from saving their legs for the next game) if they don't have to? In my opinion, it'd be more disrespectful of an opponent to just start passing the ball around without trying to score. It's one of the bugbears I had about Hill's tenure - he stated on several occasions that he found going beyond 4-0 "disrespectful". How odd! Great to see the crowd applauding both teams off the pitch at the end

Thailand beat Cambodia 12-0 in a qualifying game, albeit not in front of a worldwide audience, so they can't complain about being hammered, and to their credit they seem to have taken it on the chin

Looking forward to the latter stages of the tournament when it gets serious. England seem competent but will have their work cut out at that stage against teams like the US

Great performance. USA vs. France will be a cracker tomorrow - let's hope our girls make the most of the extra day of rest.

Very enjoyable tournament in spite of the VAR shenanigans.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching last nights game with the nose bag on (in spite of the foreign commentary). Good to see Becks supporting the girls/PN too. Thought Parris had a good game but her pen let her down at the end. At least it was meaningless.
Two things though. At one point I shouted "man on" and realised ….
And why do they never swap shirts at the end?

I think the men would be too strong and quick for them to be honest but the women have plenty of skill. Decision making isn't great at times either but I've thoroughly enjoyed watching them. I'm looking forward to France V USA tonight and then our women on Sunday. If they can beat the winners of tonight's game on Sunday anything is possible.

It makes a change from the permanently underachieving men's teams in football, cricket or rugby.

Here is an example from a few years ago in Sweden, but you would expect the women to be better these days in England with more professionalism (some of the Norway players last night were amateur/semi-pro only):

https://www.thelocal.se/20130116/45646

Men's teams of a reasonable standard would win easily due to physical differences even if they were technically worse. The difficulty is in judging how good the better women's teams/players are technically given that there is limited competition eg we can see that Hendo is a very good player at League 1 level but we know he would not be anywhere near a team near the top of the Premier League.

I have been watching some of the games and the standard has certainly improved in the knock-out stages, comparable to a slower, less physical version of lower league football in my opinion. I am happy to sit and watch it on that basis, but I do have an issue with the way it is being pushed in certain quarters as if it is elite level football. On the other hand England's third goal last night was a great strike and showed excellent technique by any standards:

Why isn't it elite-level football?

The obvious comparison (i think it's been made before in this thread) is with tennis. Who wouldn't regard the women greats of tennis as every bit as worthy of the elite label as the men? Whilst it's perfectly obvious than women aren't going to be able to compete in a mixed-sex singles tournament? Similarly for athletics

Despite the often trite posts by myself and others in terms of looks etc. (don't think anyone would complain about women commenting on the looks of male players?) i started this thread because i'm an admirer of the sporting prowess of any group or individual at the top of their respective sport, and they deserve absolute respect in terms of performance and dedication

So how wasn`t that a penalty for France last night? What were the people doing who run that silly VAR? It was a clear handball that most refs in English football would`ve given. Summat stinks about it that`s for sure, maybe they`ve already engraved USA on the trophy? Oh that`s right, most of the so called sponsors come from the US,can`t be doing to upset them.

I couldn't see much wrong with what would have been the third USA goal that got disallowed either. From VAR being used constantly now it doesn't seem to be used at all.

Regarding the hand ball she had the ball belted at her from close range and her arms were down by her side. Having said that you do see similar incidents were a pen is given.

VAR is used constantly during the game. The US handball would have been seen and the officials in the VAR cave will have correctly decided that her hands were by her side and she had no chance to move them. No need to let the referee look at it on a small screen. I think the US third goal was way offside. The only questionable one I thought was the French goal. The women who scores is onside, but there's another French player just beyond her (who the ball could have gotten to) that was off. They decided she wasn't interfering with play, which is probably just about right but it was tight.

Regarding the US " 3rd " goal my inital thought was the full back who burst through was well offside but on the one replay I saw it was mightily close.

Better team won, but bloody hell, we don't half know how to shoot ourselves in the foot

Wrong options taken in so many ways: with passes, penalty takers, midfield selection (Walsh barely found a pass in the QF but was selected and same again). Houghton had the bottle to take the pen but why didn't a more accomplished striker of the ball?

The USA are more athletic, quicker to react and just have that winning mentality. Where the hell do we get it from?

Walsh will become a better player in time, she's only 21. Agreed she misplaces passes but she "sees" the possibility quicker than many older players. She played the pass into Jill Scott who in turn put through for White to score.

There was talk amongst pundits about getting to the next level. IMO there's only one team at the next level and England drew with them in the She Believes and but for a boot lace had every chance of taking them to extra time tonight.

YOU do not have the right to give someone else permission to tell me what I can and can't do.

Yeah it wasn't our night. Best team won, we played dumb football. Why did we go two up front and stick Parris up there to get starved of the ball when she normally plays out wide. As a consequence we got over run in midfield until we changed it after about an hour.

Passing it out from the back is all well and good if you have the centre halves to do it, we haven't. Our two are decent defenders but the US were content to let them have the ball all night.

Ranked 3rd in the world and took the obvious world leaders to the death, probably about right in the end.

P-Nev has done very well overall and seems great fit for the position. Got some things wrong tonight (penalty taker among them) but the result was a fair one.

Great tournament, and with the younger players going through we should have our eye on the trophy for the Euros provided Ellen White (who is an absolute predator - reminds me of Robbie Fowler before he let himself go) can keep scoring.
