Big win by the Aussies today. Not yet halfway through but already looking like a 5 horse race with NZ, Oz, India, England & WI's going for the 4 qualifying places. Huge game on Friday between us against the WIs , and with Afghanistan & Sri Lanka up next a win would set us up nicely. Wouldn't like to see us in 4th after 6 games with our last three being India, the Aussies & NZ

SA have choked earlier than normal & other than the game against us Pakisan seem to have lost their discipline. SL only have 4 points because of 2 washouts so I don't expect any of these 3 to challenge. Afghanistan & Bangladesh were always unlikely to challenge although the latter are always good for a shock

All in all a decent start to the tournament and I for one am happy it has not been the batters tournament as predicted. Let's hope for the weather to clear up & for some close matches over the next 5 weeks

There was an interesting piece on the radio the other day comparing the coverage of the Cricket World Cup and the Women's Football World Cup. 95% of the Nation doesn't know there's a Cricket World Cup going on, it's like it's being played in secret. I'm a sort of cricket fan and I haven't seen one ball bowled live on TV. More people can recognise the captain of the women's team than they can Eoin Morgan
Last week the interest in the Women's games was massive. It must have worked wonders for the profile of their sport.
Sell your soul to the devil and it rarely ends well unless you happen to be Robert Johnson. They also mentioned that when Rugby League was on BBC Grandstand they regularly got audiences of around the 1.5 to 2 million mark, now the SKY audiences are about 250k.

Sorry, but I don't believe that 95% figure. How have they come to that conclusion? Were you part of the survey, because I wasn't? So how is it '95% of the nation'? Complete nonsense.

I was out with a mate last night who is an occasional cricket fan, but doesn't have Sky Sports, yet he knew EXACTLY what was happening in yesterday's games and the impact on the semi-finals. In the modern era, it's easy to find things out (live or otherwise) and see them happen if you can be bothered doing so.

While it's disappointing that the Cricket World Cup and England cricket in general isn't on terrestrial TV, it's not like it's a new thing. Wasn't it 2005 when the Ashes were live on Channel 4? That's 14 years ago. People know where it is now.

There are also enough other ways to 'know' something is going on. Billboard advertising, newspaper advertising, t'internet, TV news, TMS, etc.

It's a bit like when some people claimed they didn't watch the EFL highlights on Quest last season because they didn't know where the Quest channel was.

Erm, just put the EPG on your TV screen, scroll down to look for it, find the relevant programme, choose series link and Bob's your uncle! Even R17 managed it!!

That radio piece sounds to me like fitting a particular sample into a pre-conceived story above anything else. It's clever statistical practice - produce something to fit the data, rather than do the story first then find the data second.

Unfortunately, like it or not, without the money from Sky, England cricket wouldn't exist as it does today.

Anyway, if we reach the final, it will be on free-to-air TV next Sunday so people can watch it live then.

Cricket is featured on Twitter, BBC & Sky Websites - Sky itself etc etc etc
People know it’s on

I haven't watched any of the women's world cup but I've watched plenty of the cricket. When the cricket was on channel 4 play started early so as not to clash with hollyoaks! Coverage was also interupted due to horse racing etc. No terrestrial channel has a commitment to cricket to cover it properly, never mind fund it.

Without Sky and the money they provide there would be no woman's central contracts, they would probably still be part time. People may not like Sky but like with every form of entertainment it's about choice. Should I be able to see a popular concert for free?

99.9% of the uk could not care less about women’s football. I would say at least 60% want us to beat the cheating criminals at cricket

If 99.9% couldn't care less what explains the TV ratings?

And does 60% wanting us to beat the cheating criminals mean 40% want us to lose to them?

When cricket disappeared from free to air TV it lost a lot of exposure and it is suffering from that. I dont think anyone is saying Sky shouldnt be able to cover cricket, or that they do a poor job. The problem has been the monopolisation of it by cable TV.

That's the point the radio article was making. I'm old enough to remember the Summer of 2005. The whole country went " Ashes " daft for a couple of months. Even my wife's took an interest. Now all that enthusiasm is just history.
The lesson of rugby league should be a wake up call to the powers that be.

A radio article that was statistically flawed.

I'll ask again, where did they get "95% of the nation" from?

I don't know the answer to that one. Maybe they were using it as a metaphor and they hadn't really done a ballot. The point they were trying to make is that interest in first class cricket has declined pretty steeply since the powers that be signed over the rights to SKY.

Even the dogs in the street would admit that.

Maybe you weren't around in 2005.

There has never been that much interest in first class cricket, as most people don't have the time to attend the matches. One day games are reasonably well attended and the domestic 20/20 games are usually very well attended. I suspect the roses match will have around 20,000 in attendance.

Internationally, most matches in England (but not Wales) are well attended and I would wager that every day of the Ashes will be pretty much a sell out.

I am not sure the narrative fits the reality in terms of attendances.

You're right, I'm only 14!! How I managed to see Garry Sobers and Joel Garner playing for Littleborough, I'll never know.

Anyway, I get their point, but I don't necessarily agree with it. The crowds that turn up at Test Matches and ODIs in this country are very good, for a start.

Sky also had cricket long before 2005, but the fact that series was so iconic and broadcast on Channel 4 is always used as something to beat Sky with.

As I said, it is disappointing cricket in general is on satellite TV, but without Sky's money, the game would be nowhere near as big/successful as it currently is.

New Zealand defend 239 runs to reach their 2nd ever World Cup final. The first time India haven't chased 240 or less in over 3 years. All down to England now to stop a repeat of the 2015 final.

Pity it took 2 days but another very good and tense low scoring game. Looked like India might nick it with only 5 overs to go. Well done NZ who were written off by most pundits. Looking forward to the England game although sounds as if the weather might play a big part

Just seen Buttler's run out of Smith - things like that turn semi finals - just hope we play our own game now and not the scoreboard.
