Henry Conroy 11:33 - Aug 2 with 6100 viewssoulboy

I have just seen in the Observer that long standing and loyal Dale supporter Henry Conroy has passed away aged just 64. I've known Henry for over 40 years and his loyalty and commitment to The Dale was second to none, despite suffering from a terrible illness. He fought this with such dignity and courage and he will be sorely missed at The Dale. My symphony goes out to his family and loved ones. R.I.P.

Yes, I heard about this on Monday night. What sad news.

Henry was my tutor when I was in the sixth form, although I already knew him from the old Dale Supporters Club, working with the likes of Colin Smith-Markl, Chris Brierley, David Broome and Nigel MacDonald, to name but four stalwarts.

Like you say, he had taken ill in recent years, but that didn't stop him attending games.

RIP Henry.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Very sorry to hear that Henry has passed away. That dreadful disease definitely took a terrible toll on his life but he never gave in to it, fought it with courage and could still be seen at Spotland, struggling but defiant to the end.

As others have said, he has been a stalwart Dale fan, a man who I have known for over 40 years and he has followed Dale passionately through those years.

Rest in Peace Henry. Gone too soon, but won't be forgotten.

Terrible news...a devoted rochdale man through the long thin years. Glad he was able to see the better years.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I looked after him a few times in a healthcare setting and he was a genuine man. The fact that he was still a regular in the Sandy and away games even as his illness clearly deteriorated shows what a dedicated supporter he was. RIP.

I knew Henry had been ill but this is still a shock. First met him when he was in my year at St Wilfrids and he was Dale through and through. We used laugh about when he was poleaxed by a Reg Jenkins piledriver ine the prematch warmup but it wasn’t funny at the time. RIP mate.

Some very special comments here about Henry - probably not known him quite as long as some on here but spent great times together over the years.

I'm sure he'd have been very much touched if he could have read these - proving what a very special football club we all have at Rochdale.

R.I.P. Henry. You suffered long and hard with a terrible illness. I hope the lads can respond with the same battling performance tomorrow at Tranmere that you have shown to us all.

Very sad news. As many before me have said, despite the horrible illness he still attended games and before that he would always been seen supporting with his wife(?) alongside him. Taken much too soon and my thoughts go out to his family and friends. I hope he is given a good send off and a minutes applause would be nice touch before the Donny game.

RIP Henry.

Terribly sad news.

Henry was a good friend of our family and especially my late father Colin Smith-Markl, who grew up with him. Henry loved the club and was Dale through and through. I spent many an away day in his company, as I'm sure many others have too. A proper decent bloke.

The thoughts of all the Smith-Markl family are with Henry's family and friends at this difficult time.

I never knew Henry as well as many of you do, but what a lovely guy. He went through more difficulties with his illness than many of us could ever consider having to bare up to, but no matter what, he fought through a lot to make sure he could get to Dale games, talk with fellow supporters and the rest. He even turned up at shareholders meetings and made his points as difficult as it was for him to do so, such was his passion for RAFC.
The club has lost a great friend in Henry. He will be missed, and fondly remembered.

Glad to say that it was a tremendous turnout for Henry this morning, with many Dale fans, club officials - past & present - turning up to say farewell at his funeral and to pay their respects.

Many acquaintances renewed, stories told, laughter and memories exchanged.

I'm sure Henry would have been delighted to see so many familiar faces attending in his honour.

Mr Conroy taught me at St Cuthberts. For some reason we called him Mick.

I have seen his deterioration in recent years at Dale games, and only looked on in admiration at his courage and determination not to give in when life deals you at ill hand.

RIP in a true Dale Fan

Very pleased to hear that there was such a good turnout for Henry. I would've liked to be there to pay my respects, but am tied up with family commitments down south.

I'll always have fond memories of Henry and huge admiration for his courage in fighting his disease.

RIP

Only knew Henry through having come back for games and subsequently seeing him at away matches. A good man and follower of Dale. All the best to family and friends x

Did Henry have a brother called Seamus? If so I went to the Tech with him, think the family lived on Cook Street, just down from Hamer WMC.

I was about to ask the same question. I went to St Pats school with Seamus Conroy although when I met him later as an adult he did not go by the name Seamus maybe its the same guy? he also had at least one sister.

This is not the time for bickering.
