Match Thread: Dale v Newcastle United (FA Cup) on 16:00 - Jan 4 by Daley_Lama

Not lambasting the lad in any way, but Newcastle picked him out as the weak defensive link from the off and attacked him mercilessly.

First 17 minutes it was Newcastle all down their left. After the goal (and the swap with Dooley) it was all down their right.

Both full-backs were constantly left isolated 2-1 as Newcastle by-passed Baah. Atsu was having a field day until Dooley then Msttheson double teamed him. He ended up drifting into central midfield in the second half and his absence allowed us to break down his side for the goal.

He is definitely a positive going forward, the defensive side he was very green at today but all of the above, once again said with the recognition that he is 16 and learning minute by minute in the first team.

Our goal was on Bruce for bringing on Ritchie and that’s when Atsu shifted from the left, though by then we were well on top anyway as we were playing a 4-4-2 which made the most of those we had out on the pitch. Rathbone was the key by being able to combine playing on the left when we didn’t have the ball with popping centrally when we broke.

The first half was something akin to purgatory. They played well when we needed them to be average. Must admit I took a deep breathe at the first sub. But switching Dooley over helped Luke, who was different again from his recent shows. Sanchez and O’connell Were excellent throughout, but outstanding in the first half. Williams also held his nerve in the heat of battle today.
The subs in the second half were great. Although no nothing here question McLaughlin for Dooley. Ollie deserved to be on the score sheet but it was fitting that Alby scored it as he was instrumental in changing the game.
BBM take a bow, a steep learning curve that game, but not wasted on you and fully deserved result. The talk of a change in manager will die down now for at least a couple of weeks.
Can’t name a mom, but will give special praise to o’connell, Rathbone, Ryan and Wilbraham.
They lads will now be playing for their place at St James, so an extra incentive.
Great day, UTD

Rathbone was superb despite missing 1 great chance that could’ve won it. Wouldn’t be surprised if a championship club or 2 aren’t sniffing around in the next couple of weeks...

A lot of people (including myself) inwardly groaned when they saw MJ's name on the team sheet but fair play to him, he played his part when we were under the cosh in the first half and had an overall decent game.

Apart from their goal which he moves out of the way of the ball rather than taking a hit.

BBM's changes were much-needed, but he got them spot on

So proud of our second half display and we might've even snatched it at the end. Fair play to Newcastle and their fans, no billy big-bollocks that i could see and the game ended with everyone knowing they'd witnessed a proper cup tie. Onto the replay

Lots more to say, but just for now - Dale's home record against top tier teams in my lifetime after 90 minutes: W1 D4 L2

That's pretty damn good! Thanks Dale!

Sat in the main stand and Baah was blowing out of his arse after 5 minutes. No idea what was wrong with him but it gave us no end of of problems and felt like we were playing with 10 men for the first half.

Second half? Brilliant! Exactly what you want in an FA Cup tie. Players putting everything on the line and giving it a proper good go. We really did have enough chances to have nicked it. Matheson and Alby completely changed the game 👏🏼

tbf to Baah, it seems he was expected to both chase every ball up front whilst also providing cover for an inexperienced fullback - an almost impossible ask

It was the right decision tactically to replace him, but no criticism should be levelled at him whatsoever for giving us the only outlet up front when we had Hendo providing little by way of holding the ball on the deck or attempting to challenge for balls in the air

Twitter’s going mad for Matheson. Seems like everyone wants him, with the general consensus being that ‘it’ll probably take a few million to get him.’ They don’t know our board.

It wasn't a criticism of Baah, I thought he looked off the pace and should have been replaced earlier. I'm sure there was a perfectly valid reason for his performance.

First half you could tell we were up against a Prem team, and I thought it would carry on into the second.

BBM got the changes 100% right. Not much to say that hasn’t been said, but the subs changed the game, especially Luke and Ryan on that right hand side. If today doesn’t tell us, AND the board that we need to back BBM then I’m lost.

One point to make is the bar situation. Never felt a feeling of entitlement about a season ticket holder against people who turn up against big teams, but I feel we should’ve had the Carlsberg lounge or straight access to the Radcliffe arms due to the amount of footfall.

Look, you criticised Baah by saying he was "blowing out of his arse after 5 minutes", and i told you why that was - having to make repeated runs back to cover defensively after chasing balls SINGE-HANDEDLY up front

BBM realised that wasn't going to work out and changed it. Accept it, and be more mindful in future before criticising a 16yo

One thing that is apparent is that his game is suited to playing against sides from the upper echelons. That alone is something that should mean we get a decent deal when he goes. If anything, playing regularly in L1 will actually affect his value as his understandable weaknesses are exposed.

People might not like to hear it, but we should be looking right now to be maximising his value and getting a deal done. That could of course include a loan back option.

McShane incontract extention talks but isnt playing interesting situation.
Is McShane a noncontracted player now!

He maybe a decent player at Lge1 level but who higher up wants to sign somebody his age and with him being injury prone!

He either signs an 18mth contract or leaves or do the board seem to think its a pay per play situation and that covers all bases..

But and its a but, i cannot see the board letting BBM sign him umless its a 6mth deal....

I do have my doubts about the board and money, serious doubts.......

No you look, you can get to f*ck, something isn't so just because you say it.

The lad's a good prospect with a bright future. Something wasn't right today and I don't think it's anything to do with the role he was being asked to play.

Great second half from the lads, let's just enjoy it.

I had the joy of watching it on bt being exiled but my take on the game for what it’s worth, although a lot has been said already.

We got roasted on both wings first half, full backs were isolated and Magloire was too tight and unable to react to trickery and premier league pace and skill, Keohane was way too far away from his man and allowed either a cross or was on the back foot as another tricky winger did what a premier league player should do to someone who is not a left back.

We went in 1 down due to O’Connell and Sanchez having blinders, jolinden being absolutely turd and a few bits of luck.

What changed imho second half (don’t think this has been mentioned) is camps suddenly being in a role that suited him, dropping deep and adding cover whilst being able to help create, Wilbraham is a proper centre forward and we suddenly had an outlet. We suddenly had bite in midfield and stopped them having the time on the ball they had 1st half.

Baah was ineffective (not really his fault) and camps was ineffective up front first half, both substitutions added bite and an edge and I thought that massively changed the game, they were all over the place after 55 minutes and were lucky to hold on for a draw.

I thought O’Connell deserved mom, Matheson was superb and best right wing back I have seen at this level going forward, but also defended well, Ryan was excellent and obviously Alby, Rathbone and camps second half were excellent - everyone was tbh although Williams I thought did not do a great deal, Hendo quiet and Baah out of his depth, Keohane filled in as best he could and Magloire I am not sure is fully fit.

Overall fantastic though and only criticism is we still piss about playing at the back and putting players under pressure by the insistence to play possession ball, the number of times we either lost it or played it back was crazy.

A final word for Steve Bruce. No credit at all for us, moaned about it should have been over at half time and injuries, no mention of our clear opportunities second half. 40 million pound striker or 40 year old striker Steve, I know who I prefer.

Hope they go down and he gets sacked the moaning overrated nose monster!

It's the eternal dilemma with Camps - sat deeper he makes time for himself, looks to run the game and covers excellently but equally he's been a (surprisingly) effective attacker when played higher up in terms of assists (7) and goals (8).

I agree but he certainly is not an out and out forward, although tbh Hendo also looked like a fish out of water first half. Maybe as an advanced midfielder with 1 up front would work for him.

I don’t see that much these days so comments above are based on what I saw today.
