Football is generally played through the middle third of the ground. Rugby League is generally played from wing to wing,so I can’t see much difference in damage to the pitch overall when Hornets play a home game. The fact that the RL season starts at the worst time of the year weather wise is the problem,but both codes have always played in the winter mud and rain come what may. It’s part of our game and I’m sure we’ve all seen some cracking games in very inclement conditions throughout the winter months. It’s the team that adapts to the conditions that usually prevails in either code. | | | |

Bad drainage doesn't help along with the weather and having Hornets at home, sorry to state the obvious but the pitch isn't adequate enough for Both Football and the Rugby matches week in week out through out there respective seasons. | | | |

That's not counting other games played on it by both teams reserves, youth etc. It's only recently that the pitch has become a problem ? Why is that ?

The pitch has been showing signs of wear and tear in patches virtually all season.
The area along the goal line at the Pearl Street end and where we warm up has turned to mud months ago.
There has been a relatively bare patch towards the Wilbutts stand in front of the Pearl Street stand.
We had a game abandoned in the summer because of rain.
Hornets have played on this pitch twice this year. |  |

Forgetting the historical track record of hornets in their various non paying guises, be it in the 90’s or under fat bastard from heywood it’s down to the football club to a certain extent for agreeing the ground share in order to own it, I suspect once we have the chance to get rid of the traditionally non paying, under supported, shambles they will be history.
The pitch has always been shite in winter at Rochdale, hornets mostly unwelcome appearance certainly does not help, and obviously we now play a different style to the mud clogged hit it long to Hilditch/Laurence/Morris etc. Rugby could be played in a swamp and it generally would make little difference at hornets level, football obviously is different.

It's not just recently the pitch has been a problem? Its probably more noticable these days because of the quality of other pitches up and down the leagues. Ever since we've been ground sharing the pitch has always deteriorated when both teams are playing on it - it's pretty obvious that 2 teams playing on a surface is going to make that surface worse than just 1 team playing on it. There's not really any solution other than replacing the drainage system and installing a hybrid pitch with part grass/part synthetic grass like you see in the Premier League but they cost hundreds of thousands to install and maintain - money we cant really afford in League 1. It's just one of those things. | |

Yes I saw that the Hornets release talked about the concern over the deterioration of the pitch during the Law Cup game last weekend and that is in the interest of both clubs to try and protect the pitch as much as possible over the next few weeks
I wonder whether we should hire some covers again (the ones used before the TV game). Can't cost that much for a couple of weeks of protection in what is a very wet period. We can't let a screwed up pitch be the reason we end up in the relegation zone!!

Pitch realistically needs digging up I think for the drainage to be sorted completely it'd need from May all the way through to the end of July - probably 13/14 weeks. 10 weeks to solve the problems isn't enough.

If there's a game called off in the North West you can bet your boots it will be the Rochdale game. I wasn't there on Sunday so I can't comment but I'd have expected any standing water to drain off over night. From what I'm told the pitch was good to go at kick off time. | | | |

I have been saying for decades that the pitch needs a drainage trench around the perimeter. with the fall running towards to Wilbutts Lane / Sandy lane corner to connect into the main drain. The pitch drains can then connect to the perimeter trench and be unblocked from inside the trench if needed.
The other option is to raise the pitch 18 inches but you would still need some sort of perimeter drainage system and there may not be enough run-off room for the players unless you also reduce the size of the pitch. |  | | |
