It's just been on the news that school children in Scotland under the age of 12 will be banned from heading the ball in training but not in actual games. Is this the start of heading the ball becoming outlawed ? What would the game look like without heading ? [Post edited 16 Jan 2020 14:46]

I don't know Shun so I have no idea what his area of expertise is but now that I do know I'm sure he knows much more about brain injuries than I will ever know. I'm just not convinced about his conclusion, if that is the case, that dementia is directly related to children heading a ball. I have no problem accepting that Jeff Astles condition as with other professional footballers was partly or wholly due to his profession. It still does not explain why women get dementia? As I said earlier I've headed the ball in the past and seen stars with the impact. That can't be good for the brain. I know the modern balls aren't as heavy but they still give you a jolt if the ball has traveled a fair distance. | | | |

I've also headed the old caseys and felt it. I can't ever recall seeing stars and we learned fast knew when to avoid repeating the experience. I also know the difference with the modern balls but your point is non the less valid. | |

Women get dementia in the same way that people who don’t smoke, drink or do drugs get cancer. There are many number of factors at play to determine someone’s predisposition to a certain disease. It’s the reason anecdotal evidence (‘my grandparents all smoked 50 cigarettes a day and none of them got lung cancer, so the link between smoking and lung cancer is a myth’) doesn’t work.
Nobody’s said that heading the ball is the one crucial cause of dementia, but what the studies do show is that it increases the risk of it, as well as other problems.
I haven’t done any research on this topic myself, what I said was that I’ve done enough research in my career and studies to know that when studies like these are published we can trust them. |  | | |

Stop embarrassing yourself. You cannot use a randomised trial to study this type of population health question. There is no randomised trial of smoking cigarettes at least among humans.

Dementia blatantly isn't solely linked to heading footballs which would explain why women still get the illness, but if the risk increases due to heading surely a wise idea would be to try and reduce those risks for everyone...

And if this study is used to claim playing professional football in Scotland causes dementia, we could also interpret from the same data and analysis that not being a professional footballer causes cancer!
These types of retrospective analyses provide interesting observations, not proof of causation, but it gives governments something to do and another reason to interfere in folks lives. | | | |
