I must admit, the selfishness of a large number of people recently has left me feeling really annoyed and frustrated. Reports of thousands of people flocking to the coast, tourist spots and other places where there is a greater potential for contamination leaves me to conclude that the Government needs to bring in much stricter measures asap.
I also have a question which someone might be able to help with...
Why , if this is a global outbreak, has the Government not banned all passenger flights from abroad?
Commercial air transport I can understand, but why are people still flying around the World? | | | |

A couple of days ago with the confirmed cases at 39 the NZ government closed the boarders with only returning Kiwis allowed in today with the count at 102 confirmed cases the prime minister announced the country will lock down at midnight Wednesday. All but essential service personnel will be confined to the home except for shopping for 28 days with no movement outside of to the supermarket and back home allowed. These measures will be policed vigorously and offenders apprehended Decisive action yes Draconian yes but damned if the do and damned if they don't. I don't know how I will cope I guess I will have to talk to the wife if only I could remember her name. [Post edited 23 Mar 2020 10:19]

That's what we should have done as soon as it could be organised. This " Herd Immunity " theory wasn't properly thought out and has cost us priceless time.
On a more mundane note I was due a dental appointment on Wednesday. I was going to phone and cancel today but the dentist beat me to it. New guidelines mean that from now on it's emergency treatment only- which means extractions or painkillers and anti-biotics. Nothing else, no fillings or root canal work.
Fingers crossed nobody gets toothache in the next 3 months. | | | |

I’ve heard the argument is that if they don’t run scheduled services, the govt could take away their slots. I can’t think of any other reason anyone needs to fly to do business , unless it’s to bring key experts to areas in need |  |

To be fair to people that went to parks etc. yesterday, there has been a few mixed messages over this. Only a week or so ago the reasons given for not cancelling sporting events was that the virus did not survive long outside and that it was ok to attend such events (Cheltenham for example). Im not looking to score points but I did get referred to as a nobhead over what I posted a week ago. There were a few on here that talked about "herd mentality" and the need for it to build up natural resistance to the virus. It sounded daft at the time even dafter now however this thing has moved so fast that what seemed like good advice a week ago is now considered stupid. I guess what I'm trying to say is nobody knows and that includes myself and governments we are in unprecedented times. | |

With the likes of McDonalds, Nandos & Subway announcing closures, I'm worrying about the impact that will have on many. Fair enough, close the restaurants themselves so people can't sit together, but as daft as it sounds the ability of these places to get food out to the population via JustEat, Deliveroo, Uber Eats etc is important.

The government employ people, or they used to, who are experts in the relevant fields to plan for emergencies. They " War Game " all sorts of emergencies to plan for a response. All sorts of emergencies are consider normally using a worse case scenario. A Coronavirus style pandemic has been written about in novels etc, we had the Ebola crisis not that long ago.
