Difficult start for both teams in windy conditions.

Shaughnessy looking slower than usual (if possible). still can't see a footballer there. Hopefully, he proves me wrong.

Shame that Done is playing wing back.

Come on Dale.

Shaughnessy's pace is very deceptive, he's a lot slower than you think.

A large VAT Dave

If it were just a lack of pace but he had other assets such as vision or a range of passing, there'd be something to work with

His first instinct when the ball looks like it might trouble him is to do a kind of "wince" before taking an age to decide if there's anything on, by which time the opposition have closed him down

This is a player who BBM has been following with the aim of improving our squad. It beggars belief, it really does

Well BBM says he thought it was a tough game and our lads have put a lot into the last two games. He thought we were excellent. No mention of why we didn't have any shots on goal or why Vale wasn't used. But then I have only heard the snippet. Can't stomach the full watch

A 'touch' game. Doesn't apply to us, first touches are usually awful.

I’m sure we’ve all seen worse Easter Monday matches at Spotland.
I remember one particularly turgid 0-0 draw with Halifax Town. Mike Henderson was the Observer reporter and he wrote that there must be worse ways of spending a Bank Holiday such as being dangled upside in a septic tank for 90 minutes.
Today wasn’t that bad but it didn’t inspire hope in beating the drop either.
Was O’Connell’s punt at goal late on our best effort at scoring?
We got the byline once in the second half through Beesley who managed to get the ball across but I don’t think that we had another player in the box following up.
To be fair Ipswich didn’t look much better.
Lynch kept a clean sheet but was rooted to his line on a couple of occasions in the first half when crosses came in. And it was criminal how he sauntered around in stoppage time.
If Humphries isn’t going to be fit and Vale isn’t going to be considered upfront Done has to play as a striker.
Baah, for all his exciting talent, just can’t read a game.
Move Keohane over to the left and play someone else at right wingback.
Against Swindon I’d be tempted to go gung-ho and play Baah there and tell him just to run at people.
Finally, how does this long throw tactic fit into the football philosophy? More John Beck than Pep.
I’m still confident that we won’t finish bottom but by the same token can’t see us finishing fifth from bottom or higher.

I'd give us about 25% chance because we just can't get a home win that would give us a boost. Swindon next home game then Accrington who are in a slump. 6 wins away isn't that shabby but 1 win in 19? at home ?

Accrington won away today....out of their slump in time to extend ours.

So with 8 games to go and the points we have, we’re looking at at least 4 wins from our remaining fixtures right? It’s not impossible but it would be a tough ask for anyone at any end of the table, least of all one whose won just 1 home game all season.
The international break has done us absolutely no favours. Those last two games against Lincoln and Peterborough showed real intent and desire. It gave me some confidence that actually we could play our way out of this mess. But the last two games have cancelled all of that out and we’re back to playing exactly the same way we have all year. No commitment, no desire, passing backwards with no creativity and no recognition that we need to win, whatever it takes. Ipswich surprised me today by how poor they were and the game was absolutely there for the taking but we never caused them a single problem. That’s just unforgivable. I thought the keeper did better than Bazunu - he seemed more solid to me and seemed unafraid to boot the ball down the pitch when it needed to be cleared rather than playing us into trouble by pissing about. Rathbone seemed the only player going forward who was prepared to try something.
The next 2 games will decide whether we stand any chance or not. No reason we can’t win both and whilst Swindon is obviously the big 6 pointer ideally we should be looking to win both of these games. But I’d take a draw at Fleetwood and a win at home too. Play like we did against Lincoln/Peterborough and it’s still possible. Play like we have against Ipswich/Portsmouth and we might as well start planning our journey to Harrogate now.

We desperately need Humphrys back next Saturday and for the remaining 7 games after that. I think that has affected us more than the International break.

They've also picked up seven points in their last four games.

Could do with them beating AFC Wimbledon on Saturday as well.

Reminds of Mark Twain saying Wagner's music is 'better than it sounds'. Agree though, wouldn't even call it 'pace'.

"Rathbone and Osho performances stood out."
But only to the extent that they looked reasonably competent. And 2 players out of 10 (not counting Lynch, who kept a clean sheet) isn't enough to win games. They look like a relegated side, going through the motions. Done , bless him, sort of tries, but rarely actually looks as if anything he does will have any effect on the game. O'Connell is a shadow of the player he was at the start of last season and the rest look like they have found out about football by reading books on the subject. The whole team is one-paced, devoid of ideas, and seemingly frightened of doing "the wrong thing". the game has become chess when what is needed is guts, determination and devilment. Oh, and shooting at the opposition goal would probably help.

Save for one suicidal back pass at the end of the first half today, I thought O'Connell had a decent game today, as did the entire back three. I don't see a lack of effort or 'desire' from the team, just a lack of quality in key positions. We look powder puff in attack without Humphrys, both Baah and Grant show promise but ideally would be better used as impact subs rather than starting every game but there are no real alternatives. I don't want to keep piling on Shaughnessy but like others I really don't see what he brings to the team other than being semi decent in the air. We desperately need Humphrys back otherwise in the 'must win' games we have coming up the opposition can just set up not to lose and we will have no way of breaking them down.

I always get to Harrogate via M62 and A1 (avoiding Leeds city centre)

Think we would all take a win at home wouldnt we? We been waiting a long time for one. So I presume your optimism is based on pure law of averages?

Unless the manager simplifies the way we play i.e. get the ball out wide and fill the box ... oh wait a minute we only have Beesley who can cross a ball, but he isn't fast enough to get on the end of it. I'd rather see John Beck style football if it meant we would actually win a game!

Match Thread: Rochdale vs Ipswich on 18:18 - Apr 6 with 1047 viewsCedar_Room

I’m saying only that it’s a game we need to win, not one I necessarily expect us to win. If anything it’s feasible we could beat Swindon and still get relegated. On the other hand if we lose that game I don’t think it’s remotely feasible that we’d avoid relegation. For me it has to be a minimum of 4 points from these next 2 games to stand any sort of chance but I would be surprised bordering on the shocked if we actually did.
0
Match Thread: Rochdale vs Ipswich on 18:34 - Apr 6 with 1006 viewsfinberty

In that case BBM would need to break with tradition and play forward players in forward positions, defenders in defensive positions, move the ball quickly and pay no heed to possession stats, 'good areas', 'control' or anything other than goals in the opposition net.

Can this objective be fulfilled? Please?

Looking at that I’d probably say we have, on paper, the easiest run-in. Of course, that will change as the season goes on and certain teams have nothing to play for.

A lot depends on Humphrys. We desperately need him back and scoring this weekend. We have no chance of staying up if he misses many more games.
