I recall attending the match. The Int X1 was managed by the then recently appointed Coventry City (Divn 2 in those days) Supremo the late Jimmy Hill. The goalkeeper Bill Glazier had only been signed for Coventry that week by Hill from Crystal Palace for a then world record fee for a goalkeeper of £35/40k. The transfer fee had been raised by the Coventry City fans.

Glazier wasn’t in the original team as printed on the teamsheet. The following month Glazier had his leg broken in a game against Man City. At the time he had established himself in the England U23 team but the injury saw the end of his international career. He was still playing for Coventry in 1971 in the first division when he returned to Spotland in an FA Cup game…the rest as they say is history.

There were several changes to the listed teams. Also substitutes were not allowed in league games until the following season so this game was something of a novelty.

Dale were in a promotion fight so amazing they should arrange this fundraiser at the business end of the season and to put out a full strength team.

Don't remember this at all so obviously didn't go, I would have been ten at the time.
Upset that I missed the chance to see the likes of Danny Blanchflower play at Spotland!!

I do remember that about 6/months after that game I was walking through the warehouse at TBA and who should be walking towards me pushing a sack truck but Stan Milburn.

Seeing Jimmy Jones as the reserve goalkeeper reminds me of an incident where he played.
Not being the most sprightly goalie and allegedly only having one eye, he was on the receiving end of a long hopeful punt at goal from distance. I was behind the goal at the Pearl Street end. Jones sailed up to catch the ball but was, as they say slow in getting there. As the ball hit the stantion at the back of the net he reached his high point, facing towards his goal, just in time to clutch the ball to his chest. Landing, he ambled up the area and punted it upfield. I can only assume the linesman was way behind and the ref was miles away, as were any oppositio players. Play continued. We just looked at each other in the crowd and then just burst out laughing. Jimmy just smiled.

It was actually Simon Jones who was the reserve keeper. Jimmy Left in the late 50s/ early 60s.

Simon arrived from Chester, I think. He ended up running/owning the Save Records business in Rochdale market.

Not nit picking ,but thought he was signed from Gainsborough Trinity for the alleged princely sum of of £1,000.
With regard to Jimmy Jones ,pretty sure he was in goal for the first game that someone took me to Dale to watch as a 5 year old in March 1953.
Blame that person for the near 70 year affliction

Jimmy Jones played in goal between 1955 and 1960.

Churchill and Nicholls were in goal for games in March 1953..And yes Simon Jones came to Dale from Gainsborough. He played 3 games for chester after leaving Dale.

Simon became a good friend of mine for many years, we lived close by, it took him a couple of seasons to get in the side but I do recall his debut was a Lancahire Cup game at Chester in 1963, one of 3 games Dale played at Sealand Road that season.

Yes his debut was November 63 at Sealand Road in the Lancs Cup game.

He played 6 games towards the end of the season during a terrible 12 game winless run that saw us plummet the table into the bottom four priorto the final game at home to Gillingham . Burgin returned for the final 3 games. prior to the final game . 20th placed Southport were playing at 18th Oxford. Southport were one point ahed of us.

Gillingham had only conceded 18 goals in their22 away games and only 28 in their 45 games home and away.

Southport drew 0-0 but We miraculously won 2-1. Don McKenzie scored in the first minute and Ronnie Cairns, in his 166th and final game for Dale scored a second half penalty, our only successful pen of the season, to creep above southport on goal difference and escape the re election places.

One more in the long list of Dale great escapes.

That’s interesting reading that Ronnie Cairns took a pen. Stan Milburn would have been a regular penalty taker at that time.

It was also Stan’s last game. Maybe given our poor record on pens that season he had stopped taking them.

I have this mental image of Laurie Calloway taking a penalty about that time. In my minds eye he actually put it over the bar and out of the ground at what was the Church Inn end ! Am I dreaming or did that actually happen ? Big Reg took pens later on.
