Might anyone have the team sheets for our League Cup encounter all those years ago? I remember how upset I was when we lost to Colchester in the FA Cup and missed the chance to play that iconic Leeds team at the time. How different was the team we faced? And was it 3-1 to them? Oh and the attendance while you are at it 😀 Thanks a lot.

One of those odd quirks in football…Leeds played Colchester in third round and went on to reach SF losing to Nottm Forest. Cloughie’s forest tore them apart at Elland Road. I was at that game.

I was at Leeds forest game too. Brian Green was a coach at Leeds and gave us some rickets, if I remember rightly, me, StephenBirch (whatever happened to him) and Brian Holt, great game forest we’re on fire

From memory Brian Green was Dale manager at the time and struggling with an awful budget. A couple of weeks after this game he resigned and went to Leeds as a coach. Always suspected that an approach was made on the night of the game itself!

My main memory of the game is watching in awe as Leeds controlled it throughout. Dale had had a decent start to the season and beaten Darlington in the first home match and seen off Halifax over the two legged first round. Also recall people saying the gate of 8664 (exact figure courtesy of TVOS) was "poor" considering the opposition!

I thought we’d get stuck into them but we didn’t at all. It was like a pre-season friendly. They won in a stroll. Then Brian Green leaves to join Leeds a week or two later. Am I reading too much into that ?

I remember that tickets went on sale before the previous home league game. There was a massive queue snaking round the carpark but the vast majority bought tickets and then went straight home without bothering the watch the league game taking place 30 minutes later. The town was pretty apathetic (and cynical) towards Dale in those days.

Just as an aside ,talking of McQueen remember going to Ripon Races think it must have been the summer of 1978 and bumping into Peter Madden when he was our Manager Knowing next to nothing about racehorses casually asked what he fancied for the next race. He suggested a horse called McQueen --ah he is only saying that because of the football association methinks so ignored the advice------wrong

Bottom and seven points adrift of 23 placed southport who were voted out of the league, with Wigan Athletic replacing them.
Dale received 39 votes to Southports 26 which tied with Wigans 26 so it went to a head to head vote for the final spot which Wigan won 29-20. . Southports last home game celebrated 50 years in the Football league. They were the fourth team to lose their league status through reelection in 8 years …all northern teams and three of them coastal towns in lancashire (barrow and workington, following Bradford Park Avenue).
They were replaced by Cambridge, hereford, wimbledon and Wigan.
The last several home games failed to break the 1000 attendence . I went to evey game that season along with a few other hardy souls. That was the season when the supporters club had a blanket collection around the pitch at half time .
Many of us ( given the attendences the word seems misplaced) thought we wouldnt survive but the board once again called in their pals when it came to the re election votes. It was such an unfair system, but one we benefitted from on several occasions.

Just checking out the full season record….our away record was won 0 drawn 2 lost 21. We have done worse, 1931-32 when we got only one point away but that was from from 3 fewer games.
Not sure Brian Green can be criticised for leaving….unlike today there was no investment in the team, paper thin squad and he was having to play local juniors who were just not up to it (boslem, bannon, shyne …)
The previous season he had us challenging in the top four until injuries and poor form hit . Selling Bob Mountford was perhaps the last straw…not sure if it was before or after he resigned but it was clear Mountford would be sold. Scored two against us later that season for Huddersfield. His goals always seemed to come in pairs.
Getting a draw at Doncaster in March (friday night I think) was greeted like winning at Wembley!
Last away game was a friday night at Southend.Southend were going up…it was their last home game and we were praying to get that elusive away win. We felt it could be our last ever away game in the league. God did not hear our prayers!
But a good time was had by all in their club after the game. When your expectations are low you are rarely disappointed.
