I was at the Rochdale Sunday League Cup Final at Spotland a month or two ago and the crowd there required more than half the Main Stand.
Not sure it was quite 920 but wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than quite a few Hornets games this season looking at the list. A damning indictment if more people are interested in watching amateur football than professional rugby. |  |

At a community event at Spotland a couple of months ago, attended by the AFC Chairman and Supporters Trust Chairman, and with an equal number of fans from both clubs, not one Hornets Director turned up to the joint initiative.

I’m not sure the stadiums are run in the same way and so can’t be directly compared.
The original Doncaster Community Stadium was council backed as part of the Lakeside Complex if I remember rightly.
It was going to be jointly shared by Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Belles and Doncaster RLFC.
Unfortunately the stadium wasn’t breaking even and became a bit of a political hot potato.
This ended up with Rovers taking out a long lease as principal users.

Funny as I read that Tweet as more of a dig by the Hornets Chairman at Rochdale Council for not putting up money to be bidding for host status for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup unlike places like Doncaster, Leigh and York which did and will see games play in those towns.
Doncaster's council ran a year long campaign to have games and that bid was successful and they are hosting Samoa.

The tournament will benefit from central government backing with up to £15m pledged to help support the hosting of the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 and a further £10m to support infrastructure for the sport and grow the game across the country.
£25 million going in to the game at those venues and local communities so lucrative for host cities/towns that are taking part.
Rochdale Hornets were arranging England vs Fiji as a warm-up game for the 2021 tournament but that was postponed due to Covid-19 as was the whole Rugby League World Cup into 2022.

Rochdale has launched its bid to host a game in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. If the bid is successful Spotland Stadium could host to a first round game in the event.
Representatives from the council were joined but officials from the Rugby Football League at Spotland to unveil the bid and discuss the benefits of staging a game during the 14-team tournament.
Council Leader Colin Lambert said: "It would be good for the borough. Sport plays a big role in the community and I think our residents appreciate it."
It was a successful bid.

I guess 442, the pressure is on now.
Mazey has said the stated aim is to get to the Championship and the only way to do that is either win the league or go up via the playoffs.
There are only two promotion spots and six teams for those places. It looks like Keighley's Cougars will win the league so that is then one promotion place for 5 teams.
The quality in that division is so poor in that the top 6 now will be the top six at the end of the season, question is in which order.
So there is a lot of deflection going by "The Hornet" on to distract away from the actual rugby. It's a clever distraction if it is fallen for because by my reckoning Hornets still have to play:
Swinton (h) - currently 3rd
Doncaster (a) - currently 5th
Crusaders (a) - currently 2nd
Keighley (h) - currently 1st
I can't seeing them winning all of those games and then that becomes the lottery of the playoffs. Lose all four and they might finish 6th.
Clearly if they fail to get promoted this season its going to be another year in the basement division and with the cuts to RFL funding another season with limited resources and limited crowds and against the backdrop of the RFL trying to get to 20 teams, from a current pool of 37. | |

Pretty good summary. The thing that strikes me is that it could be so close between positions two to six that points difference may be the deciding factor.
Hornets do score plenty of points but tend to concede a lot as well though, unnecessary ones in some cases, a hallmark of Matt Calland’s teams over the years. | | | |

Hornets have a strange record this season…..they havewon all games against teams below them in the table and lost all games against teams above them. If that continues then they can expect three more losses.
The hornets discussion board is a joke…. on the one hand they continue to say nothing can be presented in the public domain for legal reasons, yet they are slagging of Dale board of directors for what they have (allegedly) done!!!!
Even terms like ‘Rackman’ now being used. While some of this is from the johnny come lately cronies who serve as the mouthpiece of the Hornets chair, some of it is from longstanding supporters who are obviously drunk on the Koolaid being served. | | | |

"It is so sad that the relationship between Hornets and the football club has deteriorated so badly.There have been many fallout over the last 30 years or so over many issues, without knowing all the facts of these times, it appeared Hornets were the problem with issues over rent Stadium costs etc. Chris Dunphy a Chairman sympathetic to the Hornets cause offered terms of an agreement that suited both clubs. Now Rochdale have a Chairman who wants them out, which is a shame because the work of the Rochdale Hornets Foundation has been exemplary, in developing Ladies and Wheelchair Rugby teams as well as work in schools. Obviously he cannot just bin Hornets as there is a contract in place, so the next best thing is to make life difficult for people working for Hornets. After 30 years Rochdale Football Club suddenly need extra office space, so the Hornets offices and club shop have been summoned by Mr Gauge for his expanding club and Hornets are demoted to a sponsors box, which if course can't be used on match days of either club.
It really is a pathetic way of conducting business and shows Mr Gauge has not got the bottle to tell Hornets that despite Mr Dunphys contract, they are no longer welcome. Probably because he is Chairman of a club that has regularly promoted Football in the Rochdale Community, over as many years as I can remember. Hornets since the arrival of Andy Mazey have progressed greatly in that type of work. So Mr Gauge let's hear your explanation of why would you want to spoil that progress which like your own club's activities benefits the people of Rochdale, if it in the end turns out to be an issue of Hornets not paying their way, or renaging on the terms of the current contract, then that should be made public, if as appears they are merely an inconvenience to your club then that it a very sad endorsement for you as a Chairman.Your predecessors have managed to sort out issues with Hornets sadly you cant."
That to me sounds like Dale can make more money from expanded offices etc (the new entrance decor looks smart) than they do from Hornets... if the terms of the lease that Hornets signed don't include a designated office / shop space, guaranteed capacity numbers etc, then I'd suggest that is an issue for whoever signed the lease rather than the people enforcing the lease. I think I mentioned elsewhere that essentially Dale provide a service and Hornets are the customers... we are within our right to maybe ask for additional payments for additional space / services, in the same way that Hornets as the customer have the right not to 'purchase' the space / service from us.
I admire a lot of the work Hornets are doing in the town and with wheelchair / ladies teams, but the attitude of certain posters here coupled with my suspicions of, and actions by, their chairman, make
me even less likely to want to engage with them. | | | |
