Rochdale v Salford 12:31 - Oct 11 with 5441 viewsdiver

I see that rearranged game against Salford is to be on Tuesday November 8th.Neither Dale or Salford have a game on Saturday November 5th is it a league ruling that all rearranged games have to be played on a weekday night? The last game we played against Salford was on a Tuesday night with a low attendance so this will cost the club money.

Isn't 5th November the Saturday earmarked for the first round proper of the FA Cup?

Probably because it doesn't get drawn until Monday night.

There are two schools of thought.
One is an easy game at home in the hope of progressing towards the third round and a plum tie.
The other says a home game against someone who will fill the away end and drag in revenue regardless of the result.
Oldham would certainly fit the latter category but the costs of stewarding/policing could be astronomical.
It would certainly bring memories of the first round game in 1970 as well!

I see Halifax Town are a potential opponent as well I imagine that tie would fit the second criteria. With the potential for TV money due to the A List owners perhaps Wrecsam although the last time we played them wasn't exactly entertaining. Perhaps York away for a good day out. Is the whole reelection controversy regarding Altrincham still a thing, or was it never really one?

To be honest I don't think Halifax would bring more than a thousand at the moment.
Would be nice to play Derby at home.

A team we have a good chance of beating and getting through.

Everything else is incidental.

Very true.
There are games I’d have love to have attended but wasn’t around at the time. Perhaps a suitable thread for when this board is quiet in summer?
My personal first choice would probably be the cup tie against Notts County in 1949.

The standard of reporting was so superior a hundred years ago. You can’t copy and paste that lot.

Also, they cared about their work back then too.

That can be forgiven for spending more time actually writing something original.

It probably took all day on Sunday to write and all day on Monday to typeset!
The Observer was a broadsheet in those days but this probably took up most of a page which shows the importance of the occasion.
I hadn’t spotted last year the fact that Accrington fans had arrived in 51 charas plus a special train.
No away attendance announcement in those days of course!

10 Jan 1920. FA Cup Arsenal v Dale FA Cup third round (equivalent)

Lost 4-2 sounds like it was a belter based on newspaper reports

Or perhaps Dale v Wolves 1923-4 two teams scrapping it out for promotion to division 2 (now championship) - ended 0-0 but also sounds like a belter. A Dale win would have seen us promoted.

As always, I'll take any draw away at a ground I've never been to before.

Preferably a non-league one to give us a better chance of going through.

Tangled up in blue.

It got me wondering about how a ref travelled from Preston to Spotland at the end of August 1921.

I did some very rudimentary research and seems the railways were well established.

(steady James )

and the wakes holidays would likely have finished in the town

https://mlfhs.uk/blog/1921-census-industrial-holidays-of-the-north

One of the things I wondered, bizarrely, was what time the ref would have left Preston to get to the match early enough to carry out his duties and what time he got home. Can't see him having had one of them fancy new motors.

This even pre-dates Big Kindo!

One of the major criteria for Football League membership until the 1930's was easy access to the rail network.
And until 1920 clubs were obliged to provide suitable transport for the away team to and from the railway station.
