As many Rochdale fans know, the author, Mark Hodkinson, has written several well-received books about the club. While his new novel, That Summer Feeling, doesn't feature the Dale (or football), it is clearly set in and around the town and is a spiffing read.

That Summer Feeling coalesces genres, among them coming-of-age, campus, northern, realist and comic. It takes a literate, enigmatic and upbeat view of all that truly matters in life — childhood, families, love, friendship, ambition, writing, disillusionment and hope. Always hope.
Set in 2004, it is about a young man on a creative writing course who can't decide between two girls. So he dates them both, leading to layers of existential angst. In a bid to clear his head, he embarks on a fateful road trip with his eccentric, quarrelsome pals. Meanwhile, his young nephew has a serious illness that sets a faultline through the entire family and his college lecturer is having a full-on breakdown in a rundown pub on the edge of town.

In theory, Yorkshire Dale, the book should be available in all shops, including The Bookcase in Hebden Bridge. In practice, however, it depends on whether the owner has ordered copies.
In case they look at you blankly or you can't make yourself understood through the haze of patchouli oil smoke or the clang of Buddha wind charms, please tell them That Summer Feeling is distributed by Central Books and repped by Compass. They'll then be able to find it on their computers, hopefully.
