Rooney retires from international football 13:44 - Aug 23 with 1676 viewsD_Alien

I've been critical of him in the past, mainly due to not quite living up to the world-beating promise he showed in his teens, but his career has still been hugely successful, at least at club level

His decision can only enhance respect. He's showing respect for the younger generation coming through (there may be a coaching role for him in the England setup in the future) but mainly he's showing respect for Everton, to whom he can now devote his energies

Right move to Man Utd to further his career, right move back to Everton, and I wish him well there

A bright move from Rooney and his advisers.

Shunned by Gareth Southgate for games against Scotland and Spain; he (quite rightly IMO) has called time when now asked to turn out against Malta and Slovakia.

In a world of "too much football" for Rooney this will give him more time at home with his family and to rest during the international breaks but more cynically will allow him to extend a club career at Everton to the fullest extent possible.

That club career extension gives him a longer financial opportunity but also chance to get close to Alan Shearer's Premier League goals record and the associated post career opportunities that come with it.

George Bernard Shaw had it right: "He who can does; he who cannot, teaches." https://www.visittheusa.co.uk/

The first time I saw him play as a kid at Everton I thought " Wow, this lad has everything, he's a man at 17 and a natural footballer, he can be anything he want's to be ".

He never lived up to that early promise inspite of being a top class Premier League player.

Smart decision by Rooney.

I admire the fact he didn't take the soft option that Gerrard and Lampard took in poncing over to the USA for big bucks in a barely average USA league..Rooney constantly needs a challenge and that's what hes got at Everton in the prem.
Statistically hes Englands greatest player ..but for me no one surpasses Jimmy Greaves!!

Oh no!! Who are the press going to write hundreds of dumb articles about now and slag off like they have done throughout his whole international career. I'm sure they'll find someone else. Maybe Ali or Sterling?

It's been happening to Sterling for quite some time. He was admittedly embarrassingly poor at the Euros last summer but ever since then he's been consistently targeted by the press for the tiniest of things.

If only he hadn't broken his foot v Portugal in Euro2004 - I'm positive we'd have won the tournament and not Greece.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

I wasn't really following football in 2004 but is that generally regarded as the last international tournament England played well in?

Maybe, he was a massive loss. That tournament is probably the best he's played for England.

I don't remember a good tournament performance since then.

I think you are being A bit unfair suggesting MLS is barely average. The fact that neither of those 'legends' made any impression in their short time in MLS suggests it is a higher standard than many think. Its certainly not up to the major european league standards but then it doesnt spend the money on world class players that they do.

Its has improved steadily over recent years and of course provides most of the players to the US team which has performed better than England at an international tournament level over the last decade or so.

Hmmm. Lampard scored 12 in 19 in his second season and was generally considered one of the best players in the league that year.

I quite like the MLS and try and watch the odd game here and there but I don't think it's an insult to call it 'barely average' in comparison to the Premier League.

Gerrard and Lampard were a few years older than Rooney when the ponced over. Those few years make a lot of difference.
