Sad news......remember him well. A gentle giant who we signed from York City. When he packed in playing, I seem to remember he joined the Police, over in York.

RIP Gordon.

Fond memories of a good keeper.
Seem to remember him saving a penalty in a Monday night match that we won 2-1. Walsall?

Remember in one game at spotland a forward got the ball off him at the edge of the penalty area, Gordon chased after the forward who was forced back to virtually the half way line and gordon just upended him.

Yeah that's sad news. I remember being like a man mountain of a goalkeeper.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

There was something about his distinctive yellow jersey (the first keeper at Dale to wear one, i think) that made him look an even bigger presence. He didn't stay long but he certainly made an impact

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

My very first Dale game featured Gordon in goal. I think we were top of the old Div 3 and Grimsby were 2nd. They won 1-0 and Morritt broke his leg. I don't remember too much else except that I thought we were great, especially when Darling dummied over the ball and back-heeled it to the player behind. WOW!

Since then I heard a story that Grimsby loaned us their keeper - Harry Wainman. Harry is still around and very dry with his football humour. He told me Dale were playing away at Shrewsbury and he knew that Rochdale always played in blue. He said he threw the ball out, but to their opposition striker, and he scored..! Well, he was wearing blue... perhaps some things don't ever change?!

Another Grimsby stalwart who also turned out for Dale was Dave Boylen.
Dave said he played for the reserves, but under a pseudonym, as he was already signed to another club! Think Dave, who is also around, hails from east Manchester and still has that twang.

All sounds a tad underhand...maybe like those 2 votes that went missing when Altrincham tried to oust us from the League...did their cars break down?! Vaguely recall that one of the votes was from Grimsby and the other Bury... is that true?

Oh that game at Grimsby...anything that could go wrong went wrong And i ended up being attacked by Grimsby fans on the way back to the ellen smiths coach.

Very sad news...he had played brilliant in goal and his loss coincided with a loss of form.

The 2 clubs who didnt vote were Grimsby and Luton, one (cant remember which) did breakdown and the other was sat in the wrong part of the meeting, where there were no voting, apparently it was the top two divisions who each had a vote and the bottom 2 divions got only a few votes between them (might have been as low as 4, not sure)

Thanks Pioneer - I was possibly too young to have got into or known about trouble.

Things haven't changed btw. Some of their supporters despise the opposition (and sometimes their own)! They still aspire to being a Championship side (when gates actually peaked at 7,000 average; battled against the odds and then plummeted when ITV Digital collapsed). They don't seem to have learnt from years of decline, bitter and continual run-ins with the only person who's kept them afloat.

A lot of players and their agents perhaps give it a wide berth now - it's a long drive (resettling in areas not an option these days) and then it seems it's 'off with their heads' once someone has a bad game.

Fascinating - especially the one in the wrong part of the meeting!

Had he been taken down the Cemy for some local tipple?!

Boylen was a good little player.A busy midfield grafter who got the occasional goal.

Boylan was one the smallest players I've ever seen, a bit like Willie Carlin.

Back to Gordon Morritt, and that season that he played was a weird one.

We started off well and were top of the league with an experienced team - he had the likes of Graham Smith, Colin Blant, Arthur Marsh and Dick Renwick as his back four.

The goals just dried up though (which isn't really the fault of him or any of those named above) and we then had the embarrassment of losing 6-0 at home to Plymouth in the February as the campaign really petered out.
