York v Dale
at 19:46 28 Aug 2023

An even contest?! Barring our usual lack of ruthlessness there was an obvious difference in class (as there has been in most games this season).
I agree with your sentiments about a proper blood and gender game though. Much bigger propositions on the horizon that will test squad strength.

Bradford City match thread
at 02:04 16 Apr 2023

On today's game... a rather meek defeat to opposition who, let's face it weren't that good. First minute, a 50-50 challenge, meekly turned down in a local derby. The scene was set. 3 mins in, yet another soft goal from a set piece just outside the area. I wouldn't mind if Bradford were half decent but they were nothing special, just stronger and wanted it more. The fact they're in the play offs speaks volumes for this division. We've been missing an enforcer/leader for 3 or 4 years now and it showed again today. We've such a soft underbelly it's untrue. You can't lay the blame at the kids like Brierley (who has a bright future) and Mellor. Despite the late 'resurgence' today's game showed us for what we are. Soft, with little quality and no options to change a game. Can't do the basics right. At the minimum, should be a getting a nil all draw against a limited team like Bradford today. We had more talent but much less brawn, desire and sharpness. We've been so soft for 3 or 4 seasons it's untrue.

Glad Mellor's contribution has been mentioned by a couple, he was a thorn in Walsalls's side from the outset, constant harrying, getting in behind. He contributed well in defence at times too and deserves credit. Yes, he is lightweight but he is not without heart, well played son

Next manager and reasons why...

Hill is the man for the job. Proven - twice
. Stats- ticked. And, without any doubt, and most importantly, he cares. Which money can't buy. I'd take him at the drop of a hat. Especially if we could get Flicker with him. I think the board could learn from him funnily enough. But above all, he would lead. And with a smile. In true Rochdalian style, come what may.

The lap of honour was cancelled anyway on account of safety reasons with the pitch invasion.
What a belting game, really enjoyed it. Fair play to Bristol, never gave up and had a right go and great support too. Deserved their victory. Their wingers crucified us in the second half. Despite lots of positives I thought we got what we deserved in the end (although surely the winner was offside?), we were time wasting from the 53rd minute. Great entertainment all round.

Sat in TDS, nowhere near a foul. Threw himself down when through on goal. Good call from ref imo.

Cracking well deserved win, well done The Dale! Done been good for a few games now. Humps showed true grit today, Olly excellent and thought that Shaughnessy played decent, there's a player in there. Shocking decision to not give the pen but glad it didn't cost us. Main thing was our willingness to go forwards, long may it continue. Only criticism from me today...too many Cruyff/Zidane turns in silly areas of the pitch- even Bazunu was at it (Grant and Shaughnessy do it way too often)- keep it simple lads! Anyway, well played, onwards and upwards!

Well said.
Best and most sensible post on this forum in ages.

Especially regarding the ref is a cheat.... it drives me potty! I sit in the Pearl St and them 3 instances when the ref gave a goal kick which sparked a huge reaction of wrong doing.... all 3 he got spot on (We were a bit unlucky with ricochets) ...in fact he only got one wrong....and that went in our favour when he gave a corner! Sometimes I wonder what others are watching.

The ironic cheering of Lillis was pathetic and cringeworthy....please people- if you go to the Dale to support them, then do just that. Nobody would have been more disappointed than Josh. He showed great professionalism to carry on and pulled off an excellent one on one save after the incident but it was noticeable that he didn't even look at the stand at the end of the match whereas he normally shows acknowledgement.

Anyway...surely vanilla ice cream with Apple pie?!

Portsmouth

It's a great draw, in my opinion...very much looking forward to a rematch with Pompey. Really glad of a home draw and a good test, albeit a tough one. They were a decent outfit when they visited us earlier in the season and deserved their win but there wasn't the huge gulf in class that some seem to be suggesting...if it wasn't for one piece of opportunism by the excellent Pitman then it would likely have finished one apiece. I didn't think they were as impressive as Barnsley or Peterborough. They will certainly know they got a tough draw and I fully expect (and hope) they send a full side up here if they have any aspirations of a place in the third round draw. Pitman included. He is worth the entrance fee alone- a terrific player who our lads can only benefit from learning playing against. It would be great to see if McGahey can get the better of him this time! Our form has gradually been improving since then, bar one or two blips, and this game could really be a platform to push on to greater heights this season. Saturday's atmosphere was flat barring the Gateshead fans...hopefully this game will get us going a bit more.

2nd half tactics
at 20:21 10 Nov 2018

Technically scored once?? Hmmm...
If the defender hadn't played the ball (albeit into his own goal), then our lads behind him certainly would have. Technically or not, a goal is a goal. It's uncanny how frequently a guy that has scored an own goal then gets one at the right end though!
I think we just edged the game on our first half performance, at times the two league difference was very visible as Gateshead really couldn't handle our movement and quality. Yes, we didn't play well second half and Gateshead were the better side but we gritted it out and that's a big positive. So, not a dire performance, but a gritty and, more importantly, a winning one.

Home halves
at 23:00 14 Apr 2018

Someone mentioned on another thread about maybe changing shooting towards the Sandy in the second half which leads me to the question of why do we almost always shoot towards that end in the second half? I sit in the Pearl St end these days but have been a regular in the Sandy in the past. In fact for the first round FA cup match versus Bromley I went in the Sandy and couldn't believe we played that way for the only game I can remember us doing in this season!
I assume choice of kick off or which end to shoot at is still decided by the coin toss with the captain's before the game and no captain worth his salt ever chooses the kick off. Law of averages says we win about half of the coin tosses so how do we always end up shooting towards the Pearl St in the first half? Am thinking there must be an advantage somewhere but not sure what and why doesn't the away team take the same advantage when they win the toss?
I hope somebody, anybody, can enlighten me on this please!

Also....it's impossible to get 14 points from 5 games - 4 wins and a draw only reaps 13 points. Sorry!

Wheels coming off?

Possibly the low point of the season for me that night. A poor display on an awful pitch (with decent prize money up for grabs, too). But, even more, it's the one competition where it's not totally unrealistic that we could win our first trophy. The Imps deserved their late winner that night and their attitude to the competition ( they targeted it as a grest chance for the club's first ever visit to Wembley from the outset) was refreshing and, yes, well done to them! I just wish I had backed them to do so after they knocked us out as I could see them going all the way!

Hilly mentioned in his post match interview it was an important game for the club plus isn't it a possible source of decent income, too - 20 k just for being in and 10k per win in the group stage, not uncomparable with a run to third round of the FA Cup (and surely much more winnable!).
And, of course, another chance to turn over the buckets!
Could help us turn the season round.
