Interview with an Accrington fan
Thursday, 13th Mar 2014 15:35 by Col

Accrington make the short journey over Owd Betts this weekend, and we've took five minutes out to speak to one of them.

1) Who are ya, and how long have you been an Accy fan?
My name is Neil Mcguinness age 45 and I have been supporting Accrington Stanley since 2005 when some friends invited me along to a game and the first impressions were a little bit of shock in the facilities but it was amazing how close you were to the game, the old fashioned terraces, the amazing noise and banners that were on display that came from a bunch of Supporters on the Clayton End called the "Stanley Ultras" I was fascinated and went again to the next match and that was it I have been hooked ever since.

2) What makes supporting Accy from supporting any other team? A real uniqueness in the camaraderie particularly in the fans through thick and thin we may be small in numbers but we are big of heart and that brings a friendliness that you don't often find at other Football Clubs , every summer you see the previous seasons team drift away and then it starts again with the rebuilding of a squad for the forthcoming season there is always a realisation that most players and Managers will eventually move on. Ours is a chequered History but again also a unique one.

3) Best Accrington player / manager / match My favourite Stanley player was Paul Mullin he was Mr Accrington Stanley coming through the Leagues with Stanley till our eventual return to the Football League and he was a fantastic target man who found the net regularly and wore his heart on his sleeve , the same has to be said of John Coleman who epitomised everything about the Club with his never say die attitude, probably my favourite game was Scunthorpe away earlier this season as the real Accrington Stanley showed themselves on the pitch with a real battling display and great all round 90 minutes just the day itself was memorable for a whole host of reasons.

4) Worst Accrington player / manager / match There have been a few poor players down the years some from Bigger Clubs on Loan perhaps with a bit of reputation who just showed no effort or commitment to the Club and are usually shown the door quite quickly, no bad Managers during my time perhaps the biggest disappointment was Paul Cook moving to Chesterfield and the timing of it as it seemed a lot of big talk but left with the job not even half done, Tuesday Night against Hartlepool was probably up there especially after coming off the back of that superb home win against Chesterfield last Saturday.

5) It's been a right old season for Accy with just a point by the end of September. Surely, even the most diehard of Accrington fan must have thought their League status was coming to an end. I think there was a bit of disbelief at some of the results as we were not playing badly it was more a case of not taking our chances in some games but slowly and surely the players started to play as a unit and got belief in themselves and the results started to come.

6) Why is that a club often described as being the smallest in League Two are now the longest serving members of the division? The smallness of the Club in some ways helps focus the players and keeps them grounded and there has always been a great spirit of togetherness surrounding the Club both on and off the field and have a reputation for defying the odds.

7) There were mutterings of a return for Coleman earlier in the season. What does Beattie bring that Coleman couldn't? I think personally James brought a real freshness to the Club which at the time was needed as a player who had played at the highest level there were new ideas. a different mix of players and playing style.

8) With the scalps of Scunny and Chesterfield this season, what will be our biggest threat this weekend? We have a settled back four and a good young keeper making us hard to break down the key for us is the cutting edge up front and ability of the midfield to dominate the game.

9) Any predictions for the game? I would be very happy with a point but our away form has been good so you never know.
