Former Dale striker Rickie Lambert has been called up to the England squad for this Summer's World Cup in Brazil.

It had pitched as a straight battle between Lambert and Andy Carroll, but as the season progressed it became increasingly apparent that Lambert would be given the nod after a fine season with Southampton.

Lambert heads to the World Cup having scored two goals for England in his four appearances so far.

In being selected, Lambert becomes the second former Dale player to go to the World Cup. Leo Bertos was part of the New Zealand squad that made it to the World Cup in 2010, remaining unbeaten in all three games.
